EXUP Valve/Motor

Post by petrolhead » Sat Apr 05, 2014 12:23 pm

I am trying to set the exup on the bike but running into some issues.
The valve is free it turns quiet easy by hand .
I have put on the cables and hooked up to motor.
When i turn the ign on it sets the valve but some times it just refuses to move and the motor just sits whining ..
I have played with the free play on the cables and have followed the steps for setting the free play..

Question could this relate t a falty motor or is it possible its just the exup jamming up from time to time and needs to be removed and given a good going over..

Also is it a bit mad to remove it for road use would i find issues with power low down.. :?: :?:

Try disconnecting the cables from the servo or the valve; whatever is easier.
Cycle the valve using the ignition.
Hold the servo "quadrant" between your fingers but just firmly , not in a vice like grip.
Try it a few times
See if the servo itself is sometimes failing.

I say this as sometimes some of the plastic teeth strip from inside the mechanism,
It may be that some times it is just catching the damaged teeth and failing.

Also check the cables are not fraying and jamming.

Any radial play on the valve without the cables attached ?

You may need to strip the valve itself out and see if the bushes have broken up, wearing the bush hole oval.
The spindle on the valve could jam in an oval hole.
The inner (blind) bush rarely causes problems

The graphite bushes are still obtainable; the hardest part is stripping out the valve without shearing the cap screws.

Here is a good service link;

Cut short; 90% sure servo is goosed;they are very cheap.

They run much better low down with the valve working.

Check the route of the cables it makes a difference to their free running. When you adjust the free play only do it finger tight, check the electrics are clean ... other than that do as above.

These bike are better with the exup in, it's fine when they're working.
