crank rebuilds

Post by ADG » Wed Jan 01, 2014 6:02 pm

As I cant get to do any work on my bike I was wondering about the practicalities of an engine rebuild.

Can FZR400 and 600 cranks be reground, or do they need welding up before returning to standard journal sizes?

Welding cranks can be difficult the heat can warp them - I was told this when I was looking for a way to pack out a 3he crank to take s 4jh flywheel.
I'd say to see if you can get the shells first. The cost might be a lot more than another engine though.

Yeah and crank regrinds can be a bit costly to start with.

Anyone selling a crashed low milage 600?

WRT your engine project, could the tapered end of the crank have been done really slowly just laying a bit of weld at a time whilst clamping it in some sort of heatsink? If its possible to use weld to build up the journals for stroker cranks how do they avoid warpage?

Don't know its a specialist job and for my project the tapered end would still need machining and you can't hold a crank to turn it in a lathe etc.
Do you need a 600 crank ? I've got a 4jh one

Of course you can hold a crank in a lathe. Was excellent watching my old mini's crank being cross-drilled, having the webs bladed and then balanced. Well the first 5 mins anyway. It's nice seeing where your money goes.
