Tank reserve mechanism

Post by Mang » Thu Nov 01, 2012 8:46 pm

I want to put an LED indicator on the tank reserve and disconnect the toggle switch. Has any one any experience of doing this. It's got to be better than half the engine shutting down when you get near to empty. Also I need to know how you test if the sender is working. Is there a test regime as I understand the sender just emits what ever voltage it fancies!!!!!!!

I've never had a problem with this system. I reset my trip odometer when I fill up so I have an idea when its going to happen and the empty tank changes the engine sound.
Maybe you could fill up at 125 miles ?

The sender has a float, you can check its clean and moving OK. Check the tank for water or dirt.

I answered this question a few weeks ago in question to your post.
Go to fzr 1000 UK or exup 1000 uk
both forums have loads on the 5v led mod.
There is no way to test the sender without a great deal of equipment and electrical knowledge;
It is NOT a float.
It is a thermal diode resistor that runs between 12 and 7 volts hence the 5v led
I am already anticipating loads of replies of how you could test this .!
It has all been tried before by men on other forums who are electrical specialists .

To fit the Led you retain the switch.
Lengthen the posiive lead on a LED prewired with a 5v resistor and take the positive feed to the horn positive for ease or use ignition live feed when on.
Extend the negative lead and splice into the green wire from the tank sensor below the plug on the harness side.
NB. Resistor LEDs need to be wired + to + not like std LEDs that can be wired + to -
The LED is not effected by switch position.
When level of fuel gets to sensor level the LED will start to flicker ,then glow dimly then get bright as level falls allowing sensor to heat up and allow more voltage to pass to the LED
If testing after first fitment whilst tank is on reserve do not think because it is not lit straight off ,fitment is incorrect, it takes 3/4 minutes to heat up from cold.
Tie or mount LED where desired. You can get tidy chrome bezels.
I used;
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-x-8mm-Chrom ... 53e76349b8

but in 5mm.
He no longer lists the 5v resistor in 5mm either !!!

Here is link as to how electrical reserve operates and may be customised !!

Was going to do a proper one when I first joined but there did not seem a lot of interest so never got round to it .
Loads of mods I now do on these are just "old hat" for the FZR 1000 brigade Finished 2nd 3EN2 today totally , cannot finish 32 bike till spring (too damp for proper paint job ) . 95% finished a 3HE 600 (early= one of first 5000) and got Kayla's ex 1WG to do next-waiting for bits before starting Mark's 2TK.Tend to spend more time on USA forums =its good craik.

Would do one if I could find the time "Gunny" but very busy sourcing parts for refubs at present.
Once winter lands properly;garage will be out of bounds;will start then .
Thanks for showing interest!!
Bill.
