400 Engines

Post by eabeukes » Wed May 25, 2011 1:55 pm

Hi all

Been lurking a bit round here, recently picked up a shaggy 3EN2 that turns out has no compression. I;ve been quoted £300-400 for a full rebuild, but I'm wondering if it's not just easier to fit a replacement 400? Where do people buy these, have looked on fleabay and gumtree but they seem ot be thin on the ground!

welcome to the forum

Ok there are 2 main reasons for no compression.
Most common is the valves have run out of tollerance and are touching the camshaft so they're always open. If you can read a manual and do some mechanics then you might tackle this job. The problem is the valves can become deformed and you need to take the head off to change them.

Second reason is the piston rings/ bores have worn out this would be a top end engine rebuild.

3en2 & 3en1 engines are a bit thin on the ground as you've just found out and even if you do get one you could face the same situation that your in now. So I'd look for a 600 motor from a FZR600 3HE - we have a thread running on this swap viewtopic.php?f=35&t=26259 and look to do a coversion.

We need pictures though .... we always need pictures

Thank Evilchicken

Have been keeping an eye on the conversions, I think I may need a shed to do it in first! That and maybe a grave in the garden for when i bring it home for the wife to see...!

Is the 600HE the only model that will fit? Or can other engines be machined to get in? Just wondering as there are a couple of FZR600 engines on ebay but no model numbers further.

There are two types of 600 as you've pointed out, you want the 3HE or the one with fins on the top side of the engine.
The other type is the 600R, 4JH, Foxeye or ThunderCat engines they're smooth on the sides.

Depending where your based you might find a local "man in a shed" or "race rider" who can do the valves more cheaply than a garage.

Um .... there's always an exception. The FZS600 Fazer used the later 4JH engine with the fins, it might go into your frame but I'm not certain the sprockets would line up.

What you need is something like http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Yamaha-FZR-600-EN ... 1e63de5fe1 you can pay about £100 for one but you'll need all the other bits too.

Evil - is the valve stuff you are talking about on page 3-8 of the manual? What could I use in place of the 'specialist' tools listed?!

dont have the manual so not sure but the only special tool that would be useful is a cluch holding tool so the engine doesnt move when you lift the cams

Heya, just seen your post code on the for sale section, I'm in KT2! If you need it there's a garage with bike ramp and lots of tools and a couple of student engineers who are both proficent at re-building engines availabe????
