Help! Bike not starting, losing the will to live now...

Post by bubbadel » Wed Apr 27, 2011 6:27 pm

My bike wont start, would not start with old engine and carbs either ( hence the swap) Can my cdi be fawlty? I have sparks on all leads, i have tried easy start and twice it spit back through the carbs setting my airbox on fire!! blew it out, but it wont even start on easy start, it chugs thats all. It has more chance of starting when i swap the coil connecting plugs over (orange to 1 + 3) The only pipe that slightly warms up is number 1 cylinder. It also keeps spitting back through the carbs, and backfiring. Can the timing somehow be way out caused by the cdi? The Engine and carbs are 4JH, the wiring is 3HE, not that that should make any difference
2 different engines and carbs but still the same. someone help me out cos im going insane now

What CDI are you using ???

If the 3HE wires to the CDI are in a different place then it could be that your cdi is sending a pulse to the coils at the wrong time.
There was also this comment from the 400 / 600 sticky thread
The 600 cdi is grafted into the the 400 loom using the plugs from the 600 loom. The complete 600 electrics can be used, if so a mod has to be made to allow for the fuel sender/ pump being different.
To graft the 4jh fzr600 cdi to the 3tj 400 loom
First if not done so already remove/unplug the exup motor as this is no longer needed.
Next leaving as much cable as possible on the loom snip both the 4pin and 6 pin plug from the 400 loom and remove the cdi

The 6pin and 8pin plugs from the 600 loom for the cdi need to be removed leaving as much cable on the plugs as possible. Thes cables can now be joined to the 400 loom as follows:-

8 pin plug on 600 cdi-400 loom
red/white-red/white (also joins to red/white on 6pin plug)(starter relay)
blue/red-black/blue (starting circuit cut off/fuel pump relay)
yellow/black-yellow/black (tacho)
blue/black-blue/yellow (main switch)
black/blue-white/black (pick up coil)
white/red-white/red (pick up coil)
green/white-2xgreen (fuel sender)
green/yellow- spare (fuel warning lamp- not fitted to 400 but could be!)
6 pin plug on 600 cdi-400 loom
red/white-red/white (joins to red/white on 8 pin plug)(starter relay)
orange-orange (coils)
black-black (ground)
grey-grey (coils)

With this all conneted the engine should fire up!

Small warning. With the 600 cdi 400 loom ,when the ignition is turned on the oil light does not come on (as a bulb test) before the engine is started. The light will come on though if the oil level is low (providing the bulb is ok). Untill i have figured out a loom mod to overcome this small problem i recommend you check the oil regularly (as you should anyway). IF THE BULB IS BLOWN YOU COULD RUN OUT OF OIL WITH NO WARNING!
Also in modifying the loom the reserve switch becomes obselete. The engine does not run on 2 cylinders as the 400 does ,instead the rev counter dances to 8500 rpm 5 times then works as normal again to warn you the fuel level is low (either that or i have a fault with my fuel sender). If the rev counter constantly dances to 8500 you have a problem with the fuel level circuit.

Thanks for the reply Evil, im using an fzr600 3he loom and cdi, (previously using 3he engine) it was fine until a few weeks ago when it started getting harder to start first thing, eventually failing to start altogether. As my 3he engine needs a new first gear i decided to get another engine to use in the meantime. I'm going to get some cleaner tomorrow, do you recommend one or any will do?

But your running a 4JH engine ????
I think it would be best to use a 4JH CDI and the 4JH loom will make it easier to connect.

Cleaner ... carb cleaner you mean ??? Just buy the cheapest it's really all the same, also check brake cleaner same stuff different can ;)

I have got it running, sort of. coil leads had to be swapped over, it runs but only on 2 ish. when running at low revs you can hear it trying to kick in the other cylinders, with throttle open 1 and 4 are dead, so i pulled a cap off and there is an intermittent spark, it sparks when it tries to kick in but only 2 or 3 sparks every 5 seconds, spark is white whereas 2/3 coil spark is blue/white. I changed the cdi with a spare 3tj one i have and there was no difference. I think it has to be the coil

Yes it sounds like the coil.
I think 400 coils are lower power than the standard 600 ones so it maybe wise to replace as a pair.

The coils go to plugs 1+4 and 2+3, is that the problem?
