1wg conversion woes

Post by fzrbob » Fri Apr 01, 2011 11:01 pm

i finally got round to starting the rear conversion to a 17" on my 1wg. I have got a 3tj swingarm, 3tj shock linkage and an r6 (2co) shock. When i've come to bolt it all together i have very minimal travel before the swingarm fails on the reservoir on the shock. i know you have advised me in the past about doing this conversion so hope you can help or shed some light?

i am also (once/if this goes in) hoping to do something with the front end to improve suspension/braking. i have some 3tj forks so was going to use them but then i thought if i'm gonna upgrade why not go thundercat/r6 with blue spots - any thoughts??

many thanks

bob

im not sure about the 1wg,but the 3tj requires a shock extension as the 2co shock is shorter than the 400s so this may explain the shock reservoir fouling the swingarm.kayla who is a forum member sells these to bring the shock length up to the required length.you cant bolt the r6/t/cat blue spot calipers to the 3tj forks as the caliper spacing is 83mm and the t/cats 100mm(or maybe the other way round) but you can get mounting brackets from nk racing that allow you to fit either the r/6 or t/cat blue calipers or gsxr600k3 tockicos.

You used the red spring R6 shock ?
With the swing arm and shock in the frame is the awingarm parallell to the ground ? - if it isn't then you might need the extension piece. Have you tried it with 1WG linkage (if it will fit).

I'd use either the T'Cat or early R6 front ends ... The T'Cat bolts up to a 3en1 frame I'm not sure about the R6

have you used different dog bones, as if you are doing this you will need to adjust to get the correct ride height (well I did!) it could just be that it needs doing and once the bike is sitting correctly you might not have any issues?

hi all,

i used the red r6 shock with a 3tg linkage, swingarm and dogbones when i got the fail, i have since put back in the original 1wg shock just to hold it all together. the 1wg and r6 shocks are all but the same length compared to the longer 3tj shock

next steps: attempt the r6 shock with the original linkage which is kinda offset compared to the 3tg linkage - the r6 linkage is also offset to one end maybe this would help?

try the r6 shock with an adapter to give better clearance?

get new shorter dogbones and repeat above.

i am adamant that the r6 shock should fit but i guess it is going to be a wheel in and out exercise to get the final results.

any further suggestions GRATEFULLY received

thanks again guys

No they're not, and there's the problem ;) 5mm on the shock will give a big difference at the wheel- up to 20mm or so. I can't remember if the 3TJ linkage is shorter than the 1WG one, but if it is then that will tend to pull the bottom of the shock in and 'under' the bike, moving the reservoir down towards the swingarm.

You should get a result using the 3TJ arm, 1WG linkage and the R6 shock. You may also need to use slightly shorter dogbones to get the ride height correct, but if you're using a 3TJ rear wheel then the height of the 160/60 tyre on the wheel might end up being the same overall height as the original 140 (?) 18" tyre. I know that a 160/60 17 on a 5" wheel is taller than a 140/70 18 on a 4x18" wheel.
