It's a FZR400R 3en2 1WG they were an 89 model
It's best to fit a FZR600 3HE engine, you'll need the down pipes and it would be better to get the carbs that went with the engine. Fitting a 600 cdi will bring the redline down so you don't blow it (the 400 has a higher red line).
Once that's done you can use the 600's mph clocks without the bike restricting

The engine is a straight swap no plates needed

As Boris said ^^^

I have an 1986 fzr400 1wg with a fzr600 3he engine in and the same model bike with a thundercat engine in.

To avoid any messing around I put the correct looms and cdi's on, but other people have chopped and changed.

The biggest pains as mentioned are the exhaust and airbox fitting, but I don't think you'll get a much simpler engine transplant than on the fzr's as you can usually use most of the fzr4/6/thundercat parts one way or the other.

Parcel should be with you on monday Boris

ps I'd try and avoid a 1989 fzr600 3he engine as they come with an oil cooler....they are exactly the same mounting / shape as the later model engines but its just one more thing to go wrong/make brackets for ;)

My hybrid has got a 1989 engine and i wish I'd gone for a 1990 onwards one ;)

Just as I think of it - the radiator needs spacing on the brackets to avoid the header pipes.

Bit colourful your bike innit

Ta Barry I'll let you know when it's here

Hi guys so if I buy a whole fzr 600 3HE engine (including carbs) 1990 upwards? would be straight fit? & Would just need to get a 600 cdi & clocks? recomend changing breaks & tyre sizes? Ive never done this before

Thanks for your help

The FZR600 is more or less the same bike as the 400. The engine is physically a bit taller (20mm) in the barrels and the bodywork is a bit different, it also uses the same brakes as the 400 but it would be a good idea to upgrade them - a set of blue spot calipers fom an R6 with the R6 master cylinder (complete with reservior) will bolt straight on and fit braided steel hoses if they haven't been done already.
The engine is a straight swap - the gearboxes and engine cases are common to both engines.

You can run the 600 on the 400 cdi and loom but there are some differences that can throw up a couple of problems, they're not major it's just easier to use the 600 stuff.

One tip - clean the bike and degrease the engines before you start.

You'll be fine and if you get stuck just ask us.

The later 3HE had the same size tyres and wheels* as your 400, so you'll be fine

* although the rear wheels are actually different, the rim sizes are the same- 3x17 front and 4x18 rear.

edit- I've got a 3EN2 I'm considering making into a 4/6 too.

If you fancy a bit more of a challenge or you see one cheap get a thundercat. The motor will slot straight in with the usual exhaust niggle.

The only big difference I found was the whole ram air/ carbs dooberies. I had to get it jetted in the end but now makes (according to the dyno printout) 102hp

Personally I would try and find a complete but cheap bike and swap over the best bits. I figure why make it harder than it needs to be by trying to splice 2 looms/cdi's/clocks together. I ended up buying a t'cat with minor rear damage for £800 and after selling all the unneeded plastics/parts and my spare 400 motor the transplant probably cost about £200. I should've kept the cartridge forks and ignition switch though   Ebay was a lot nicer (and cheaper) place to use back then mind.
