so
1 what are they (i know there 55/40w according to the yam workshop manual)
2 nowhere does it tell me what sort of lamps i need (h4 to long h7 or what)
help i'd like to see the deer just before i hit it

Japan only lamps with Yamaha only bulbs at about £17 each. The only way I can see is to either cut the plastic back and replace the lamps with better units if you want to keep the look

sorry boris you've lost me,
cut what bit of plastic back?
also from the schematic it looks like the two inner lenses (milky bar kid type lenses) inside the outer diffuser lens could come out and leave plenty of room for h4 lamps
it may take a bit of wangling but any reason you can see why not,
i may need a relay but i'm not worried about that just yet i wanna see if it'll work first

The TJ lights come in a sealed unit, the glass lens is sealed / glued to the plastic casing. if you want to get into the housing you'll have to cut it. Then you could replce the two paralever lamps with H4's or even HID's

gotcha cheers
i'm gonna whip it off and have a look, but if it's stuck/glued together i may just leave well alone, I've seen the price of second hand tj lights
also gonna try taking a lamp in to various motor factors and see if something similar is made in a higher wattage

From the thread in the general section
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=24026
there's this link
http://www.theretrofitsource.com/produc ... cts_id=221
They look like H1 units and could maybe mount in the 3TJ's headlight ... but you'll need to cut it
There's these too

Ok as a little bit of an update I bought
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 3D1&_rdc=1
You have to like snipe tools some times huh ???
Anyway it turns out that this unit has H3 and H1 bulbs in there so I might just have a look and see if they're any better than standard one dark night ... and then maybe chuck some posh bulbs in them too.

nice and cheep gotta be worth a play, good find
i've been working on something for the lights, by way of adapting H4 lamps i'm gonna pick up a dead one later (no sense wasting a good un)
it's only the size of the mounting plate on the rear of the lamp that's different the standard tj lamp is the same size diameter (metal part) as the H4 and only 5mm shorter overall, i've measured inside the tj eyeballs and there 115mm deep so plenty of room there
i'm gonna set to work with the dremmel and see if i can cut down a H4 to the tj lamp size
pics to follow if successful

zombie thread
well it's taken a while to get round to it,
but i think iv'e sorted the TJs 1 candle power light's and also managed to keep the tj standard headlight and loom
i got a H4 lamp and cut it down to fit the tj headlight fitting, for the moment it's got fly leads to connect to the connector on the loom as a temporary measure until i had the whole thing up and running, as i didn't won't to butcher the standard loom now i know it works i can trim down the lugs on the H4 lamp to fit the tj connector on the loom so all the wireing is standard and can be easily changed back by simply unplugging the H4 and replacing with the standard TJ lamps
anyway TTIUWP
the left lamp is standard the middle is a standard H4 and the right one is the adapted one
iv'e only done the one atm to see how it works, but have another to do once i've tested the light at night hopefully this PM then i'll upload some pics of the light's working in the dark

Cool - so you just dremmel cut the H4 mounting ring to the right size ???
