3TJ - Clutch Alternatives

Post by sparkie-fzr400 » Sat Sep 25, 2010 4:36 pm

Anyone managed to graft a Thundercat (YZF600) complete clutch unit into a 3TJ?
Upon inspection the back gear is much smaller on the YZF than the 3TJ, and wount connect to the start gears. I thought this would be a good upgrade and hopefully not cost as much as a full race unit being it has 6 springs than the 5 on the bike at the moment.
Is its the RRSP that had the 6 springs out of the 3TJ's?

Cheers

Ive got the very first 3TJ 1 model - 1989. This has got the the 5 springs. My clutch plate were pretty buggered after I'd raced at the S100, so I whipped it out and thought about seeing about upgrading it to a Thundercat one as its got an extra spring, but also being the 600, it would cope better with the extra power, than the 400 one. Ive got an after-market part of the clutch (the bit which goes on the outside of the plates, Im hopeless for the names of parts  ).. conparing with another clutch from a standard 400 engine its been machined away to allow an extra plate, 9 steel plates in total. Dont know where its from as its was in the bike before my time of ownership.

The 3TJ back gear plate on the clutch has got massive rivets onto the basket. I'd thought about drilling these then swapping it over with the YZF600 one. I'd have to remove a bit of metal from the internal casing to allow the basket to rotate round, and allowing for heat expansion. I wonder how much it would weaken it by if riveted back toether?

Doing it all on a budget you have yo try to use the part you've got available. For the time being I've just used the plates from another engine I've got spare.

Just a thought....

It will not weaken it if you rivet it back,
