Cam Chain Rattle

Post by pearson* » Tue Jul 13, 2010 11:19 am

Well, recently I've been getting a rattle that seems to originate from the right hand side of the bike.

It's a metallic sounding rattle, kind of like a slapping noise.

I'm just wondering what the problems could be, could it be a worn tensioner ie just needing a replacement or should i be looking at replacing the chain itself - is that hard to do?

I have looked at just replacing the tensioner but at £80 for a new one its a bit expensive for what's effectively just a gamble.

I'll try and shoot a little video later so you can see what you think.

Thanks in advance.

The cam chain runs in the middle of the engine. Un bolt the tensoiner from the back of the engine (the big nut)clean it and refit see if that works.

If it's def from the right hand side of the bike, are you sure it's the cam chain?

Other possibilities could be a bit of noise from the clutch. In which case does it still make the same noise when you pull the clutch lever in?

Rattling exup valve? Mine used to do it all the time I owned it. I just left it, as at least it meant I knew it wasn't seized.

Will do tomorrow, thanks.

Err, well, i started it up today, let the clutch in and out, the same rattle is there on both occasions, the bike just vibrates more when the lever is let out.
I have also noticed a little clutch slip... could be related?

Thanks.
