fzr 400 3tj 4DX help!

Post by Tomahawk » Thu Jul 08, 2010 4:30 pm

I have recently brought a 1994 fzr 400 3tj uk model. its been off the road for just under 2 years. Number 1 cylinder dousnt seem to be working properly. have changed all the plugs. fresh fuel. Am yet to get the carbs off tho.
Would the carbs be the problem cause it doesnt seem to want to idle without the choke on. it revs but bogs out most of the time. Every thing else on the bike looks it really good condition. And other than the number 1 cylinder not working right the engine sounds fine.

Would anyone be able to help me please.
Cheers

I had this on a bike I had recently, it just wanted the plug lead on the number three pot wiggling and then a bloody good run out.

I would suspect a carb issue, likely to be some crud in the jets if its stood for a while. Whip the carbs off and clean them up, if you have access to an air line then blast the jets until you can see daylight through them. Make sure everything is adjusted correctly and then have another go at firing it up.

My only other thought if its just one cylinder is maybe an iffy HT lead, so you might want to consider that as well but with the other symptoms you've mentioned it does sound like a fuelling issue rahter than electrical

No1 is the lowest cylinder when the bike's on the side stand so odds on the jets (idle and main) are blocked. Just clean the carbs and then try.

cheers guys.
when we changed number 4 plug the HT lead came off but that one runs fine. we checked number one and it seems fine. will give it another check. but definatly going to get the carbs off.

Any other advice would happily listen.

cheers

I had a very similar problem with cylinder 3. I had the valve clearances checked, which were all ok by the way. Then totally stripped the carbs and bingo, full of fuel residue and crud. Thoroughly cleaned them out, blasted the jets etc and reassembled, setting float heights and mixture. Finally balanced them up and the bike ran an absolute dream. I would also pop a new fuel filter in if the carbs look full of crud for the sake of £2!

The bike is now running on all 4 cylinders  with a good clean of the carbs. but it still wont idle without being on the choke. dont know why that is.

Have you balanced the carbs after cleaning them out?

There should be a small black wheel thing on the right side (????) of the carbs to adjust the idle speed.

You could take it to somebody (or a garage) and them set the carbs up properly

No haven't had the carbs balanced haven't got the money to waste. As long as I can get it to idle I'm happy.
