Have I Just Wasted My Money...!

Post by Q007 » Mon Jun 21, 2010 11:28 pm

Missus got chatting to another lady at the toddlers group about their better halves..! My missus mentioned I liked Motor bikes n this other womans fella used to ride, n bought an fzr 600 foxeye as a project 5 years ago... tinkered with it got bored n gave up after about a month... left it under a tarp on the back patio ever since.. :wanker:

said if I wanted it £200 n it's mine just to cover what he spent on it in the first month wich he had receipts for (basically replaced all the disks with brand new and r6 blue spot calipers  from a scrap yard on the front)

so me not being one to deny a challenge I paid the £200 thinking if all else fails I'll break it n try n make my money back. full set of plastics should fetch me a few quid what with the blue spot calipers n bits shouldn't lose anything.

but I really wanna get her to run so cleaned the carbs drained the tank, added new fuel. new gel battery, full charge tried to turn it over but just chugs for about 15-30 secs then gives an almighty backfire. but just won't start... anyone got any ideas what it might be...? thought it might be the wrong firing order maybe, anyone got this info.... or maybe just shot coils as the ends look pretty rusty... the ht leads are numbered but they are on in numerical order left to right surely that can't be right..? any help will be appreciated guys although it's a 600 I'm sure what with all the hybrids you guys own someone may have some answers for me. :Ass:

here's hoping Q.

It's been standing for 5 years ??? Did it run when he got the bike ???
I guess it's a little late for oil down the barrels then

Ok - so tell me you changed the oil, filters and plugs ? The firing order will be the same as your 400 and No1 would be left as you sit on the bike but it probably doesn't matter that the numbering is wrong. The coils fire top and bottom dead centers "wasted spark" so 4 and 1 both fire at the same time and so do 2 and 3.
If your getting a backfire you know your to far off though there must be a spark and there must be fuel getting through .... so.
Clean the carbs (again) and make sure those jets have light going through them.
carbs on, connect the tank and alow the fuel pump to cycle then flick the kill switch and allow the pump to cycle again, take the tank off.
Airbox off
Jump leads on (if you use a car don't run the engine, if you use a bike then run it on a fast idle tickle the choke out a little)
A good bit of carb cleaner in the carbs mouths, lift the slides a little to get it right down there.
Choke on for the moment
Ignition on push and hold the starter .... this may take a little time. Keep the engine spinning and feed the carbs with carb cleaner hopefully the engine will spin over faster ... experiment with the choke a bit and only move the throttle tiny amounts. As the engine tries to fire keep the starter button in and spray the carb cleaner over the carb intakes.
Place your mechanical sympathy to one side :(

First thing to check is spark plugs I always say. When I bought my FZR400 first time it started no problems, but when I got it home nothing happened except backfires and real loud Boooom. I bought new spark plugs for just 20 quid and replaced them. Now it starts perfect except that something is not balanced well and it will need balancing.

So as I said replace spark plugs or just clean them off with wirebrush and check is the space where the spark should be is ok.

EVILCHICKEN0 :plus: DOES IT AGAIN, FOLLOWED YOUR INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER N SHE FIRED UP WITHIN 2 MINS. CHEERS FOR YOUR HELP YET AGAIN.... NOW SHE RUNS AND TICKS OVER NICELY I HAVE THE DILEMMA OF SPENDING A FEW HUNDRED QUID ON HER N TAX N MOT FOR A 2ND BIKE OR SELL AS IS N TRY N MAKE SOME MONEY.. SHE'S GONNA NEED NEW TYRES N CHAIN N SPROCKETS FOR A START MANAGED TO PICK UP A SPARE PAIR OF FORKS FOR £21.04 DELIVERED NEED RESEALING BUT WILL STAY SEALED AS THE PITTING IS MINISCULE AND RIGHT ON THE BORDER OF THE TRAVEL SO WILL ONLY TOUCH THE PITTING UNDER REALLY HEAVY BRAKING.

BRAKE DISKS N PADS WERE NEW WHEN HE PUT THE COVER ON HER, DISKS ARE RUSTY BUT THE WHEELS ROLL WITHOUT BINDING TOO MUCH SO THINK THEY MIGHT POLISH UP WITH THE USE OF THE BRAKES(R6 BLUE SPOTS) WITH NISSIN MASTER ON THE FRONT AND STANDARD REAR CALIPER WITH BREMBO MASTER.

SO TYRES N CHAIN N SPROCKETS A FEW LAPS ROUND THE BLOCK TO TRY N POLISH THE DISKS BACK TO LIFE A SLIGHT BLOW IN THE EXHAUST WHERE THE TAIL PIPE JOINS TO THE COLLECTOR TO BE FIXED N TRY N GET MOT ON HER IS THE PROBABLE DIRECTION I'LL TAKE.

CHEERS AGAIN EVIL :plus:

I'd put the MOT and tax on it - ride it for a while and then sell it before the summer ends.

They're actually a very good bike. Of course you could just offer it on here as a donor bike for a 3TJ conversion.

Result !!!

That looks like a tidy bike for the dosh, I'd say it's worth £800-900 in the summer. They're an underated bike and as you say, they have a nice engine.

Look for a 3TJ with a blown engine and do a conversion ;)
