FZR 400rrsp Brakes WITH PICTURES

Post by topgun4334 » Thu Apr 08, 2010 11:12 am

Hi people ive got a fzr400rrsp race bike and have been having a nightmare with the brakes i had the standard disks with sbs pads they used in the r6 cup, ferodo brake pads and they just don't work they was making the disk go blue to the point where they have become that hot the disks have got cracks in and ive had to scrap them now ive got the ebc pro-lite races disks ( they are not the cast type) with the ebc extreme pads they sell you that's supposedly compatible with the disks and they are sending the disks blue again, the calipers have been checked to make sure they are running straight and they are and also they are not binding, i obviously need some much softer compound of pads does any one have any ideas or recommendations ? your help would be greatly appreciated because the brakes are giving me a right headache :(

I use EBC HH ... but I'm not a racer.

Are you brakes stopping you hard enough or are you pulling hard with not much happening ???

Have you got in touch with EBC or one of their reps

I've fit EBC HH pads then.
Even though they're a road pad they'll work with the discs so you won't have the same spec "level" as you have now but they won't fry your discs and glaze the pads. You'll have brakes for the whole race and therefore be faster over the distance.

Rough the new pads up before fitting and clean the disc surfaces with with emery cloth then brake cleaner. Bed the pads properly by heat cycling them, use them gently at first then build them up but allow a good cooling time in between

have you had a similar problem to me before then ? and the current pads in are the ebc extreme pads i have no idea if they are a hard compound pad or not ive just had hell with the brakes on this bike and are the HH pads cheaper ?

No - I'm a road rier with a road bike. Although I have the usual braided lines, a radial master cylinder and standard discs + calipers.

The HH pads are sinterred metal road pads and can be had reasonably cheap on the bay ... I think I paid about £30 for two pairs.

That's not too bad price wise i just might try that option, ive been told about performance friction too had anyone had any experience of these sorts of pads for racing ?

the race pads were recommended to me by the tech at brakes4u, i'd drop them a line and tell them your problems, they are really good people and they might have an idea as to what the problem was! is there any chance that the pads/discs could have been contaminated by anything? i had a bike that was parked up near a filler for oil fired heating, the guy spilt quite a bit then kindly jet wahed it away all over my bike, was a very interesting ride home! not that it's likely to be that bad but a possibility?

I phoned ebc brakes direct up which is where i purchased them from and they said they was going to phone me back which they haven't so i shall be on the phone to them again today. And that is a good point about contamination but i don't think so in fact im sure they haven't been contaminated because i have been very careful with them i put them on with rubber gloves to make sure nothing got on them very sad ino but i have had that much trouble with them its unreal i followed the letter to bedding them in as well they have only done about 3 race meeting from new.

I bedded my last brakes in - new brembo pads, new ebc discs with a session on Oulton Park. did not fart about and just made sure that I gave it some respect until it gave the power I wanted.

After a session I had the most ninja brakes.

This on my YZF with blue spot calipers.

The fact you are cooking the rotors and pads makes me wonder if they might drag slightly and cause too much heat - how full is your reservoir? If it is right on the top limit you might find they pads don't retract far enough..

Also, for racing - I am using the EBC HH pads and they do the job OK - nothing special but consistent at least.
