blue spot brake conversion
Hi I'm thinking of getting some blue spot caliper for my 4dx, do you know if this is possible or more importantly if there's an adaptor bracket available anywhere. If not and I could get some made would people ad interested in them and what ball park figure would you think fair. Thanks

Re: blue spot brake conversion
Ah right, we have had this before, the blue spot is a very good caliper for original equipment, the body is stiff (less flex, better feel) however ... as you've probably spotted the mount is 100mm whereas the 3TJ / 4DX is 83mm. You can put a braket on there but the offset is wrong too so the caliper needs to be machined too. The calipers themselves are bllack, on a bike that's mainly silver and brackets always look bulky and clumsy.
The upside though is the original calippers and brakes in general are good but you need to have good disks, lines, pads but most of all you need clean calipers. If you think you want better brakes after that then have a look for a 19/18 radial master cylinder (I've got a 19/20 and it a bit on/off). One from something like a 600 should have a brake light switch too, that will make it easier to fit to your bike.

Cheers for speedy replies. I pm'd you drunkn not sure if you got it tho. Cheers Boris it's not so much that I'm after much improvement but after pricing up complete refurb on standard calipers I thought it might be more sensible to price up an upgrade as well mate.

It's about £50 to replace the seals - you can usually get away with cleaning them if they've been in regular use. Really it's the master cylinder where the improvement can be made

Re: blue spot brake conversion
It's a monumental PITA to fit blue spots to 3TJ forks, and there are two ways to do it-richards8248 wrote:Yeah its been stood for couple or 3 years Boris and they're in a bit of a state. I was just wondering how much you were wanting for them drunkn.
1. Machine the mounting faces of the calipers down by 2.5mm to get them to line up with the discs. You can use the bottom caliper mount on the forks if you do this but you'll need to use an l-shaped bracket, a couple of spacers and some longer bolts. The downside to this method is that the calipers need to be permanently altered and this reduces their resale value. Budget around £40 for someone to make the brackets and machine the calipers down for you.
2. Machine some caliper brackets from 25mm thick aluminium. If you do it this way you don't need to machine the caliper mounts down, which is good, but they're expensive and time-consuming to machine so don't expect much change from £150 for a pair.
I did look into making the caliper brackets from two pieces of 12mm thick ally bolted together, which would've meant that it might have been possible to make them adjustable to fit 320mm discs as well as the standard 298mm ones (I was thinking of trying them on the 4/6 race bike I was building) but there's not really enough free material to bolt them together, and making them so there was enough material would have made them excessively heavy and moved the calipers too far out from the steered axis.
Moral of the story? The standard calipers are fine.
edit- buy those blue spots and brackets, they're a bargain if you were already going to use blue spots.
