gear position indicator

Hi,does any body know if you can fit a gear position indicator to a 1989 fzr4003tj ?
my new race bike is running a race shift,i up 5 down, i was told you could not fit one to early bikes.

You can but you need a speed sensor.
The unit measures the revs and speed to find which gear the bike's in

hi there on rs 125 honda its connected to the selector drum dont know if one of these could b adapted
