Relay - same or different?

Post by nick » Fri Jun 18, 2010 8:43 pm

Is the relay (the larger one, not the flasher relay) from the 3TJ the same as the one from the T-cat?

I've cross checked the part numbers and the number parts are the same but the letters are different

3TJ is 3EN819500
T-cat is 4TV819500

I know that the letter refers to the particular model in the range

I've also looked up the 600 Fazer which uses the same one as the 3TJ, as does the Foxeye 600

Any ideas?

It's possibly the same part but with out looking at them side by side you can't tell.

The starter relay controls the safety switching before the engine can be fired, no signal will be sent to the starter motor solenoid or fuel pump without the safety switches for the side stand, clutch and neutral being in the correct position
so if it's in gear, it won't start, without the clutch pulled in and so on
check out the wiring diagram's to make sure they do the same job the 3tj (it's an rrsp but does the same job ) diagram is in this thread

don't know about the Tcat or firefox but there is a post with the Tcat Manual on here somewhere check it out see if it might work
hope this helps

As far is i can see from the wiring diagram you'll need the relay intact, maybe you could link out the side stand switch to fool the relay it's up (switch closed) but you need the signal to the starter and fuel pump or it's no go, and even on a track bike you don't want it starting in gear, could be embarrassing if you aint got the clutch pulled in,
someone with track bike wiring experience feel free to chip in

I'd keep the clutch switch for the sake of a wire, you also need the neutral position sensor.

I've ditched the left hand side switch gear so the clutch switch is history.

Having had a look at the wiring diagrams, it all looks about the same, so i'll use it and see what happens

The starer relay/ fuel pump relay is the same on the thundercat and 3tj (thundercat one fitted to my 3tj trackbike). Its also the same on the old 3tj genesis 600. It needs to be fitted or the ignition will be cut on the fuel pump side of the relay.
The clutch switch can be removed from the handlebars as i have but the bike will only turn over in neutral as the clutch lever switch bypasses the neutral switch on the starter side of the relay. This can be resolved by looping the 2 clutch switch wires, but i havent needed to do this.
If the starter relay part of the starter/ fuel pump relay has faulty diodes then the clutch lever will bypass this (I have this problem on my genesis, and a friend also had the same problem with his thundercat).
If the sidestand is removed the sidestand switch has to be looped out as the ignition circuit is earthed through this when in gear .
Hope this helps.

Cool, thanks Tim. Do you still make the engine adapter plates for hybrids, in need of a set :)
