Trying to Figure what brakes are on my 1990 FZR400/600

Post by kcallowai » Thu Aug 22, 2019 6:47 pm

I bought an 1990 FZR400/600 and am slowly fixing things on it. I am trying to figure out what brake rotors are on this bike... I would like to put some new rotors on it... but I dont think the rotors and brakes are original. fronts are dual disc - dual piston, gold housing....

Is there a method to determine WTF the brake rotor is??

Any comments would be helpful

Thanks

That seems the same brakes most Yamaha bikes at the time had, I'd take they are Sumitomo calipers. Those are stock ones on the later models, probably. You can see them on the early FZR750, the 2TK, 3ENs and such, with 100 mm mounting bolt pitch.
If you can measure the diameter of the discs themselves, the later FZR600s had 298 mm discs, the earlier ones are similar to the 1WG.

You can also bring the rotor to the parts shop and have the guys there check it out, but that's just my opinion.

Ok this will depend on the model of 400 you have.
The Genesis, 2TK, and 3EN1 all use the earlier 285mm discs. All of these have 38mm diameter forks, the calipers us 100mm centre mounting bolts.
The 3EN2 and all 3TJs use 298mm. 3en2 have 41mm forks and 100mm mount bolts, 3TJ have 43mm forks and 84mm mounting bolts.
The FZR600 3he has both sizes of disc so check if you're buying secondhand. The later FZR600R 4JH and older shape FZS600 Fazer both use 298mm, the Fazer has black brake carriers.

Yamaha disc bolts are a bit soft and they have blue thread lock on - heat the wheel hub to soften it a little and use allen head socket not an allen key. If the head rounds out you'll need to cut it of with an angle grinder (wear goggles) and then mole grips.
It's best to replace the disc bolts with new - you can get stainless or ti from ebay. When you put them back in use thread lock on the end of the bolt and copper slip on the other 3/4
