Hello Newbie..i've just joined and into'd myself..
Just wondering if i could shoot a few question to those more knowledgeable on here...I've just bought a absolute mint 400SP with 3000 miles on the clock been stored a long time, it needs a few things doing to it but I'm hoping just to get some quick fire answers to these questions.
1 Front shockers on the SP are adjustable...are these standard FZR items? are the shockers on the 1wg all interchangeable.
2 I'm presuming all parts on the 1wg will fit and parts off later models fit directly? I know its mainly cosmetic stuff that differs on the FZR and the SP...I think the suspension, rear single seat and a few engine parts differ?
3 The shocker Stantions are corroded and need re-finishing? anyone have recommendations on where to have done in Manchester area. Ive heard brooks suspension in bradford are good?
4. you may laugh...anys source of new parts? or good second hand.
hope these arent numb nuts questons.. I'll start rummaging through the forum see what i find
thanks
chris

Hi Chris,
In response to some of your queries, no not all 1WG forks are adjustable & no they're not (mainly) interchangeable unless you change yokes, clipons, etc..The diameters change from 38mm 1WG upto 41mm on 3EN & 43mm on 3TJ, also the calipers/disc diameters change. I have a 1WG & a 3EN2 & there's not much that is the same - interchangeable-ish maybe, main thing that's the same is the engine & wheel/tyre size! Some bits from FZR 600's again will fit, but not much is the same! Hope this helps & I'm sure you'll get more responses with your other questions. Good luck.
Phil.

Re: Hello Newbie..i've just joined and into'd myself..
Chris;
Been following your 600 build over at 1K.
1.The SP 2TK has, as you know the adjustable preload caps. It also has slightly different valving, spring length and preload spacer length. The fork bottoms are different from the 1WG Genesis mount spacing to take the twin piston calipers.
I am unsure if the stanchions themselves are different as a parts manual for the 2TK is presently unavailable.
2.Some of the Genesis parts fit.
Really there are so many differences that this should be checked on a part by part basis.(for specifics just ask )
Principally; everything from and including the subframe rearwards is 2TK specific, as is;
The tank cover and mounts.
Carburetors.
Engine valve train.
Gearbox.
Clutch slightly different.
Front forks as you state.
Rear shock with remote.
Swinging arm.
The exhaust is slightly different but the later Exup 3EN series will fit.
This is not comprehensive;A 600 3HE oil cooler is fitted.
3.The stanchion damage is probably is why you enquired about the front forks.!
The front and rear suspension is very undersprung on Fzr 400s for european riders and benefits from uprating.
Brookes suspension make a very good job of building and tuning units; on your stanchions; they will farm the rechrome and grind out to a specialist hardchromer. The 2TK rear unit is specific but may be replaced via the R6 mod or a specified build.
4. Many new parts are still obtainable;certainly the consumables.
The problem is finding a dealer with a parts fiche.
Any Yamaha dealer will advise on price and availability if you have the part No.
Hope this is of some little help.

The 2TK was a pretty comprehensive redesign from the Genesis quite a few ideas went into the 3en1 and after that the 3en2 was again changed, that was the last 1wg.
The 3en header pipes are stamped 2TK

Re: Hello Newbie..i've just joined and into'd myself..
Only difference on headers was a seperate plate on the rhs, very similar to lhs, to access the valve and bush.
Yamaha obviously retained the four downpipes but altered the valve chamber..
I think the cable mounts and the pulley is different also.Without access to the parts manual this is supisition.
When I did Mark's, there were various brackets and pulleys included of which only one combination worked correctly, probably due to location of servo and extended cables on the 2TK as opposed to the 3EN series.

Re: Hello Newbie..i've just joined and into'd myself..
Many thans for all the answers much appreciated.
Yes the fzr 600 should be somewhere near done this Monday just awaiting a chain! Then on eBay ! She'll be a very nice bike for someone but I have a new baby on the block to spend time with
All useful answers - anyone got recommends for the for work that needs doing and approximate costs
If I'm having the forks done what should I do to improve them whilst being refinished ?
Question is with my new appendage (sp) should I nut and bolt refurb or keep it as origanal as possible ?
Just put new bridgestones on
Love your sp ! Looks a minter ? What colour are the wheels ?
Is the exhaust the same as mine? ( mine was Manu April 87 -yamaha said it was a really early one? when did they start making these)
How many of these SP s are there in the uk and what values ?
Big question to last - not ridden my bike yet or been on a 400 for 30 years
What should I expect in comparison to its big brothers FZR 600R I have and my FZR1000r
It already feels great the riding position and weight ! Can't wait to hear the little bugger up in the 14k !
Thanks

Re: Hello Newbie..i've just joined and into'd myself..
I've had 2 3en2's they're nice to ride, I imagine the 600 is ridden lower in the rev range with a bit in reserve the 400 changes its engine note at 8000. They're lighter than the 600 so I'd expect quicker steering.
They're a one year bike only produced in 87. I'd keep it standard as possible. Lots of these are first big bikes and get tat put on them - bars and silly seats

The wheel paint is non original;just a cheap job I did to tidy them up a bit. They should be; off white,by the sound of things ,yours is unmolested; keep it that way.!
Mine has the stock black can,There was/possibly still is some really nice aftermarket stuff available in Japan.
Problem No.2 ;sourcing and speaking Japanese! This appears to be Southend Chris's department!
Laminator, also get's on here, has a real tasty one, mine is just a cheap copy !

Stick with Brookes Suspension;they have a good rep. and wont rip you on the regrind.
If you have the ££,get them to suggest a suitable emulator set up.
Google up "Madsi" you will get a bit more general info. You can work out the numbers from his link to model identification.
Here is a quick one for you;
See if the 2TK top cap fits your 600 forks.Yours may be a later model.
I did a quick visual on my 3HE(very early one) versus the 2TK and the forks look very similar;however the parts book for 3HE does not mention 2TK in the part no. prefix.Could be a cheap stanchion fix/plus emulators for the 600 are common!
