I put the standard black can on a 3EN2 as part of a complete system. It sounded really nice for a standard one, it got a bit of a growl at 8000 rpm.

Re: Hello Newbie..i've just joined and into'd myself..
well today was the first day i've really had a chance to get a good look as the SP...well she is very much an original bike. original creamy thick paint job on the wheels like i had on my fs1e .. everything is pretty much standard the bodywork has obviously not been cleaned or polished in a number of years the are a few blemishes on the bike surface rusts
Tank on right side lacquer is worn through at knee height and a couple of impact marks. I think the tank would have to be resprayed to get back to mint.

Im presuming the frame is all aluminum and these can be scotchbrited out?

It does look like the front calipers have been painted silver? sure they re supposed to be gold.?
Front forks are the main problem but i'll be in touch and get a grip on cost presume £200

Screen is cracked. some on ebay ? anyone know of original or are these any good..
Dont look like these have been undone?

Well the big question is do you leave as is or start to refurb, I dont plan on doing anything drastic, my mate has a shot blasting place and i can get stuff powder coated.
wheels? powder coat,
Is this the original paint and valve covers?

The exhaust has a little work YAM on base...welding is awesome...looks just like exhause on Ow01 needs a good polishing.

The exhaust and exup valve look minty new..

Rear spring looks minty as well...will look ace with a strip and clean down..

Can i just get rid of this surface rust or is there something i should use ?
another mark on the exup seat areas

I have feeling this should be gold...
The bike actually may be sold shortly so i may not end up doing any of this but at least you can see the bike..
All in all a remarkable bike really with such low mileage and great condition easily capable of a little work and then going in someones collection can on go up in value ...
How many are there in the UK ? How many where manufacture?
anyone.. cheers.
when did they start producing Jan 87-Jan 88? can find a lot about them..
cheers

The flaking tank lacquer could be cut back gradually and a new top coat of lacquer applied overall.
It will not be cost effective to completely respray the tank cover.
You appear to be missing the fuel tap handle; These are still available from Yamaha.

The frame is alloy but with a brushed coated finish ;it is hard to match; you may have to sacrifice the finish on the top section of the s/a completely to remove all traces of corrosion.
I had to take all the coating from mine;the corrosion was that excessive.
Yours would more than likely retain its originality if left.

The calipers appear as gold on brochures .
Your shock will clean up nicely but will always be undersprung.
Mine was unsalvageable;

A pattern screen is available, obviously not Yamaha quality and you will need to mask and spray it to copy original.

87 was year of manufacture but more precise details do not appear available.

I wonder if your bike's been resprayed by somebody like dream machine. It the bike looks like it has deep shiney laquer with the decals underneath then it might be. Yamaha painted their bikes in a one shot type paint and then applied the stickers
I've only seen paint chip like that when it's been a respray, the paint breaks at the joint between original and new.

Re: Hello Newbie..i've just joined and into'd myself..
Hi thanks for the info, no the bike as definately not been repainted,
I have the petrol key but its cracked at the end and needs gluing - good to know as i'll order a new one..
Ive bought a screen already should be here tomorrow ( theres one on ebay a second hand one but its of a later model one as theres a piece missing from the bottom part)
I love the silver wheels maybe the way forward lots of chips and mark on these white wheels. ( or should i just leave them)
Is there no other way of treating rust...have you tried - Jenolite on your frame? anti corrosion stuff.?
Ill try a little scotchbrite and wd40 see if i can lessen them in any way..
lookng at these paddock stands? anyone got or recommend
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221088264313? ... 1438.l2649
I have a really good paint guy called Steve at Estoteric blackpool I'll ask him to have a look at tank.. ( but thanks for the info) I've tried matching the pearl white before and you just cant get it right even trying to blend over a couple of panels. this isnt through the the paint so laqueur maybe poss.
Ill get him to do the screen with the black line in.
cheers...

The way I treat rust is with paint stripper, wire brush, rust killer repaint and use "PU" laquer.

Re: Hello Newbie..i've just joined and into'd myself..
I would leave the wheels alone or refinish as close to original as possible.
You have a 26 year old bike with 3K miles on it; the more you detract from original; the less desirable it becomes, and these were pretty rare to start with.
You have not decided if the bike is a keeper yet.
Individuals will offer different views but you asked for opinions!
There is no steel on the frame,s/a or subframe to rust;they are all alloy.
Jenolite is principally used on ferrous metals to convert iron oxide (rust) to a more stable compound using phosphate.Looking at their website;they do have some new products which you may be referring too.
Be very carefull of chemicals on these frames;they stain and discolour very easily. Even cellulose thinners can do a lot of damage and that is very mild compared to many products claiming to clean alloy.
You have a right job on trying to remove the patches of corrosion whilst trying to retain the brushed finish.I no longer attempt it on the 1000r's.
I tried many processes;none were satisfactory, fortunately I have a spare s/a in much better condition.
Perhaps a dremmel tool with a steel brush applied local to the damage gave the best results, but it looked so much like a patchwork quilt that I relented and stripped back to clean alloy.
The subframe will probably benefit from refinishing as the paint on the alloy will surely be bubbling in places.
The fork legs need sanding or similar first to remove the outer layer of oxidisation before buffing.
The outer surface hardens and resists polishing once corrosion has reached that blackened "worm trails" stage.
When you get him to paint the screen; the black also goes up the sides to mask where the fairing overlaps.(unsure if you still have the original !)
I have no experience of those paddock stands. Can you adjust the front one for width?
The rear V and square fitting type on the one shown is good for single handed use, much better than the round pivot type. I prefer a pin system for the front that goes inside the fork slider.
For major jobs such as s/a swaps and fork removal I use this.

Re: Hello Newbie..i've just joined and into'd myself..
Many many thanks for the info you seem to know the bikes well ? Love the garage ? Is that an engine lift your using ?
The original screen is still on but has a long crack held together with a pull tag. I know what you mean about the black and it also has a white yamaha sticker and a Japanese sticker with loads of writing. On so ill try and heat this up and put it back on the new screen.
The alloys are marked in places not seen any bubbling but will check not an eye sore but I do like to get things right but ill take sone picks let me know what you think
It's going to be as close to original as possible
I have a friend who is married to a Japanese woman - going to see about getting parts via her when they go to japan or via websites she had a big family out there so maybe a good source of parts
The bike may not be going on the road yet may be going in my house if I can get it mint !
I don't want to try and remove the rust if its gong to stain ! May just keep on top with DW40 ? Will this stain the SF n SA Any good ?
Won't the shockers/ forks be done to a perfect finish by the company I'm taking them too don't want to attempt myself ?
I have a centre stand for my fzr1000 but this is too big I think
I may pull the trigger on these on eBay ! Depends
Ill get some more pics of the bike up
I've been offered a lot of money for the bike by a guy from Doncaster - a collector ! So he says - !
Coming down with cash on Saturday so we will see !
Thanks

I wouldn't buy those stands
