Good man  So about the build thread :o seriously though keep us up to date with the bike and how soon you get the MOT.

I need to sort my weight out ... after the holiday I think.

nice one chap you know it makes sense

i wouldn't worry to much about the smoke as long as it's not all the time,
me and the good lady wife rode up to calne bike day in july with a load of chaps from the bike club, and in true convoy fashion we rode to the slowest bike's speed, a 125 so only got to about 75 on the down hill bits, twas more like 55/60 most of the way there and back,
on the way home they turn off before me, and in true poser fashion, i dropped back, then went howling past em at a quick pace ;) later i had text about the smoke belching out, although apparently only for a few 100 yards and then it was smoke free
the upshot is i don't think they like to be ridden long distances like a 125 :o and they need a good blowout to stop em getting coked up
just a theory
but as mine don't drink a lot of oil, and runs like it should, it works for me

I have shed loads of information on this subject. Have a look at these videos and it should become apparent why we are getting fat and sick as a nation:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exi7O1li ... ata_player

The general principle of being lean is:
Eat 1g of protein per day for every lb of lean body mass.
Don't eat processed food.
Don't eat sugar, flour, bread or cereals (that also means no cake or donuts)
Easy on the beer (4-5 pints per week).
Eat lots of unprocessed meat, fish and eggs.

This seems difficult at first but opens up a whole new range of food, as you can eat full fat everything.

Well, I reckon this motor is knackered. It won't idle, cylinder 3 seems to be oily.

I guess you either sell the bike as is or look for an engine.

Are there any known to be good engines out there?

I've already got a hybrid. Hell, I've got another 600 engine in the garage but wanted a standard ie insurable bike.

there still insurable now, so if you got a spare 600 motor just sitting there, then chuck it in, you'll still get insurance atm, and have big fun ;)
when i said, in the near future, i meant over the next 3/4 years you'll find it getting more difficult to insure a hibred and after that, it'll be specialist insurance only, for big $ if at all
but for the time being, and as you have the parts available to do the conversion, then go for it,
in the mean time, you might be able to pick up the bit's you need to rebuild the 400 motor (probably expensive, but doable over a couple of years) or look out for a used 400 motor, and then have the option the put it back to standard with a decent re-con engine

Well, the good news is that my 400 engine is OK. I don't know why (as I have tried 2 different sets of carbs that were set up as per spec) but cylinder 3 was running far too lean at idle. I discovered this with a CO probe up each exhaust port while running the motor with the exhaust taken off. A few turns out on the pilot and it kicked into life.

So it's worth finishing this project. Lots of time off over Christmas too.

I've already got a 600 hybrid track bike by the way. It runs and rides but I want a standard road bike as the last time I insured a hybrid, it was about £200 then they wanted about £400 for the renewal. I only use a bike maybe a couple of times per month, so the £70 I pay for classic insurance on a standard bike makes more sense. The 400 was only underpowered when I was hanging around with people on 1000s but I don't do that any more, so 60bhp is plenty for tootling about on, keeping momentum up through the bends.

That's odd that a cylinder would run different to the others, apart from the inner cylinders having larger main jets. I can uderstand that no 2 would be exactly alike but then again they shouldn't be unalike either. Could it be something with the vales or the air box ?
