FZR Greetings

Post by cad600 » Sun Sep 09, 2012 2:48 pm

I posted up in the General Intro section, but figured I would post more FZR specific intro here.

I'm Rob. Been riding for a while. First bike was a FZR600 of 1989 vintage. After some work, I got it to look decent. I'm also a MOD on the FZRArchives and a site director on FZROnline. But I honestly don't participate much from the last 4 months.

Then a low side later:

So I started to rebuild. A really good deal on a swingarm snow balled into this:

The only thing left from the original bike was the frame (which was modified to take the offset shock of the swingarm) and the side fairings. I even put a YZF600 engine into it.

Loved it, but had to part it out. Second bike is a YZF750 that was in horrible condition:

After a lot of work and a different engine, I got it running. Spent way too much money on the suspension, and decided to do a track day.

Fell in love with the track. But also got board with the mismatched panels. So I painted and ended up with this:

So here I am now. I'm intending on building a track bike from one of the best handling bikes ever produced. The 3TJ is what I want. I'm planning on putting a 660 into it (I already have the engine parts). Been talking with one member about shipping a frame to me from the UK. Hope we can strike a deal. I'd be more than willing to help out shipping any parts from here to overseas as well. So just let me know what you need. I'll help out as much as I can.

So here I am. I'll be posting as the build progresses.

Hi Rob,good intro.I am new on here myself but used to use the Kawa section to do what you intend re shipping.Welcome in anyhow, from your history on other forums I can see your "kosher" but thats for others to decide for themselves.Did you see my note on your forum about frames being specialist items shipping wise?
Have you seen one on a UK site? More than likely a member here has one if you ask nicely!
Have you any thoughts on how to ship this.I think "Fzr George" from UK on your other site was going to do this for a man who was serving overseas and wanted UK stuff, perhaps ask his opinion as he's a Mod and will know the script.
Which state are you in?, its handy to know in respect of waiting for replies as we're about 12 hrs (this should read years imho) behind ! .
If you want something specific :post in the wanted section of main site but put a "reminder" note on here as its mostly honda in sales and wanted and will soon get buried (the post that is not the honda unfortunately).Bill.( edit just seen your intro: Atlanta ,add it to your profile so it shows up for others.)That George is a stickler for it on your home forum.

Hi, I'm one of the three(?) US people with a 3TJ. Steve at Speedwerks has one, I dunno where #3 is at currently. I've been having the same fun as you trying to find bits, although I've been shopping for smaller parts so far.

Powersportsplus . com has been decent so far sourcing little OEM bits for the 3TJ that normally the US shops can't get. Speedwerks has some stuff on hand, especially motor bits.

Looking at eBay.co.uk I see two bare 3TJ frames up for sale at the moment.

Ok - I'd say that you could probably do with a fuel tank and riders saddle to work with the frame and an airbox. The airbox can be cut to acconodate the 600 carbs, they're not expensive and don't weigh a lot. Tanks are a bit hard to find though.
Do you want 3TJ (race glass) bodywork and will sir be requireing lights with that ???

Front and back ends are probably best sorted for US stock.

Yep, Yamaha George is a great guy. He has helped me out in the past getting me some parts for the 750. It didn't sell very well here compared to other parts of the world. I've sent him a few bits as well when he needed.

I know of 2 3TJ's. One in California is a race bike owned by a person with the screen name Roaddogma on the Archives. The other was sold by Steve @ Speedworks on consignment from a track org. control rider to bmiller (both here and on the Archives). bmiller sold it to a fellow in Canada who was able to title the bike for road use and it has sense changed hands 2 more times. bmiller almost bought it back each time it has changed ownership. Not sure if Steve has any more bike, but I've heard that he has parts.

I'm not in the market for a full bike. It would also be too cost prohibitive for me to get one shipped. I've looked into it. But I can piece on together the way I want it if I can get the frame to start. I would need some other parts that can only be sourced from the UK. Tank would be nice but not a deal breaker. Yokes would be helpful, but again not a deal breaker. I'm planning on designing a custom set of yokes to run a newer R1 usd front end. I'll design them so that I can maintain the stock geometry. Other change will be figuring out a way to run a R6 rear wheel. This will give a slight weight advantage and make finding tyres easier for me. Finding a 160 tyre (that I like) is slightly difficult here. The big item would be the track body work. If I can find someone willing to part with theirs, I would rather buy from a board member. But I've seen the quality of the ARD Racing bodywork and would enjoy having theirs as well. The stock seat and latch would probably be the main desire for me after the frame and swingarm. Maybe the rear sub frame, but I don't think it is really needed for a track only bike.

For now, I'm stuck in a holding pattern. I've been looking into shipping cost and about to have a heart attack from the prices. If I can't get them closer to what I deem reasonable, I might as well go get a newer R6 or GSXR750 for track and road duty. Hopefully good news on the shipping front tomorrow.

The R6 rear wheels was done by Suspensionsmith on the Performance Bikes forum but I'm not sure if the thread is still up there. He used the R6 swingarm but had to shorten it, he probably did some other bits to it to get it to fit with the frame. Kayla uses the TRX swingarm and wheels (they're common to the YZF 600 foxeye).

I'm sure people over here would be interested in the yokes for the R1 forks - I've got a standard set you can have

There are 2 seats - the RR or road version uses a seatlock that's common to a 600 so as long as you have the subframe that would work. the subframe is steel though and quite heavy. Then there's the SP single seat, so it doesn't use a seatlock, this what get copied when with the race bodywork, it uses a different subframe too. If you look at the 3TJ the rider sits on the main frame.
