where can i get a seal guard

Post by Hogdigerdy Dog »

well that's the official name for it, everyone else calls it a swing arm protector or chain guide, part number is 3TJ221510000,
i read a thread on here a while back where they were mentioned, but cant find it now, someone reckoned their about a 5er new, or if anybody has a good used one they want to sell i'll have it, but i suspect most will be well past it, i tried fowlers but they only sell gold plated ones  £37 with vat and delivery
so if anyone knows where i can get one from at a reasonable price i'd be well chuffed, i gotta get one but it seems a lot of dosh for a bit of rubber/plastic, must cost all of thrupence/ha'penny to make

looks like 1990 fzr1000 and 93 3he fzr600 ones are the same part number cept the 1000 is prefixed 3gm and the 600 3he.might give you a wider search option.

no scrub that, just had a look at the parts diagrams and theyre both different even though the 1000 swingarm looks very similar to the 3tj.you could try granby yamaha on 0115 930 0020 they might have one.trouble is theyre all at least 15 years old so the chances are any 2nd hand ones will be knackered or nearly knackered.i had the same problem myself finding a good used one and gave up and bit the bullet but im sure they were 14 quid last year coz i needed 2 one for the road tj and one for the track tj.37 quid is a bit eye watering !

@ cagiva
like you say the used part will be shagged and the new one is nut kickingly eye watering,
i fired of an email to granby to see if they can help, cheers
but looking at it i reckon i can knock one up without too much trouble, a bit of ally sheet about 2 or 3mm cut and shaped,
probably be easier to go round the bearing end than make the clothes peg look of the original, then fix with the original screws or tap the holes out and put some 10mm (headed) bolts in, then fix some rubber/plastic with serious epoxy resin to the ally for the runners.
only problem i can see is if the ally peals away like the rubber has done (the rubber just ends up shredded) but the ally could end up between the chain and sprocket which might be an issue, although most MX bikes have ally brackets with nylon runners,
plus side just change the rubbers top and bottom (for a couple of pence) when they've had it
i'll have a go at it this weekend, i got some original headers with exup valve coming tomorrow so it'll be in bits again this weekend to fit those ( the manifold bolts come out without snapping it's the original 21 yr old pipe) so i'll have a look and see what i can do

edit cagiva, that was your bike down poole quay last Tuesday night ? i didn't park next to it, would have put mine to shame, i'm concentrating on getting the suspension and engine sorted out first then hopefully this winter it'll have some cosmetic surgery, that is one sweet moto me and the nipper hung about a bit but no one seemed to be with it and when i came back down with the missus you'd gone

maybe not then
well the seal guard was easier than i thought,
i had some 5mm thick, fairly hard, plastic strips so using what was left of the old rubber seal guard as a template cut out the shape in the plastic long enough so it goes around the end of the swing arm with just enough clearance between the swing arm and the rear most fixing in the drive chain cover, then heated it up on the missus cooker, she was well pleased, bent it round a tall glass to form the bend and fitted it with the original screws as the thread in the swing arm is actually an insert so i didn't want to mess with it,
then i cleaned, lubed and adjusted the chain and took it for a spin expecting it to be chewed to bits in a couple of miles but 250K later and it's fine, now i know it works i'll have to find some 5mm thick hard rubber to make a permanent replacement as i think this will last longer than the plastic.
pics to follow
the zorst worked out well too, got all the nuts off no problems replaced the pipe with the new one, which is in excellent condition it had been sand blasted and painted with high temp black paint although i gave it another coat and the exup had been serviced and packed with copper grease so i put it back together and fitted the pipe, the only problem was the chrome cover over the exup pulley, the fixing hole's are different so some minor adjustment there and that was that.

well here's the pics of the original home made seal guard, i got banned from the kitchen cooker after the first attempt she wasn't keen on the smell of burning plastic, so i knocked it up in the shed with a blow torch,

all i need now is some 5/6mm thick hard rubber and i'll knock up a more permanent replacement.

is that an r6 2co shock on your 3tj coz i noticed its got a black spring on it and there seems to be a red spring on one of your shelves in your workshop-have you changed the spring on the shock and did it make the ride any nicer as the standard spring on mine seems way too hard for the road(though great on track),if so what spring did you go for,as the roads on the iow are bumpy as buggery!!
