900RR/VTR1000F front brk master cylinder fit NC29 CBR400RR?

Post by jd400rr » Tue Oct 24, 2017 9:33 pm

Does anyone know if the CBR900RR/VTR1000F front brake master cylinder is a straight swap for NC29 CBR400RR??

I can't find OEM assembly available anywhere, but most components (reservoir, lever, etc) are the same as U.S. models CBR900RR (93-95) & VTR1000F Super Hawk (98-04).

Thanks in advance for any assistance!!

From memory, the CBR400 master cylinder is a 13mm bore so any master cylinder with the same bore can be fitted. The bore size is moulded on the back of the master cylinder usually close to where the brake line is fitted.

I suspect that the bore of the fireblade / vtr master will be bigger as they had 2 calipers both with 4 pistons. A better bet maybe one from an early CBR600 as these used the same 2 piston calipers as the 400

The NC29 master cylinder is indeed 12.7mm, marked 1/2". Front calipers have 2x 25/25mm OD pistons.

The VTR1000F master is 14mm. Front calipers have 4x 30/27mm OD pistons.

Fireblade master cylinders were all 14mm until the RRW-X, which were 5/8", then 3/4" on the 929 and 11/16" on the 954.

What are you trying to do, exactly? By the way, the only other Honda 1/2" master cylinder with a remote reservoir that I know of was on the NC23.

Ciao,

I just bought the bike and I'm going through everything to make sure all is in order and it's safe to ride. While inspecting everything, I noticed that the front brake master cylinder housing is missing a piece right where the lever engages the piston. I don't think that it's really affecting the brake performance, but my OCD self wants a complete unit without cracks or missing pieces. Since I'm in the U.S. and CBR400RR specific parts are difficult to come by, I was trying to come up with an economical solution to replace it. Obviously, I can go buy a Brembo radial or similar, but trying to keep costs down because of the other items I want to get for it - tires, brake pads, etc. I can get a used master cylinder from another model for relatively cheap on eBay and maybe a few more $$ for a rebuild kit. If I go with a larger mm spec master cylinder, it's just going to be mushier/softer right?

Honda's NISSIN master cylinders have many common parts. Here is the parts microfiche: https://www.bike-parts-honda.com/pieces ... 00+RR.html

FWIW, the piston rebuild kit is pn. 45530-471-831, a part that is available in the USA because similar parts were used on the '88-'91 Hawk GT and the recent 125 Grom.

Check the part numbers you need at Partzilla or Ron Ayers--or just google it. Many of them will be available in the USA, despite the NC29 never having been sold officially outside of Japan.

You can fit a larger ID master cylinder, such as a 14mm one, which are very common, but a larger master cylinder will decrease power/lever travel. The brakes will still work, but you'll have to squeeze harder (maybe harder than you want) in order to stop the same as now. For that reason it is usually a good idea to maintain the OEM ratio between master cylinder and caliper pistons.

Ciao,
Yes, I've been able to cross reference a lot of Honda OEM parts from other U.S. domestic production bikes, so I am able to order OEM or aftermarket parts fairly easily if offered on other bikes. I can't find this master cylinder anywhere though. I guess I'll just have to keep checking eBay for something to pop up.
