hi guys.
Ever since ive got my bike the temp gauge has rarely read over a 1/4 on the hottest day in a que of traffic?
ive changed the sender and the stat and flushed the cooling system?pipes all get hot, take the cap off the rad and its def hot in there, dont hiss like some of the other veichles ive taken the rad cap off though?
if you earth the wire out, the gauge flys round to max so i can only assume that is all good.
Also how can i check the rad fan switch/fan works it never kicked in after a hour of tickover balancing the carbs? is it linked to the temp sender?
cheers dave

Re: Temp gauge, false reading???
The good news is the temp sender and the fan switch are totally separate circuits, so if your gauge never lifts much than a quarter, and the fan doesn't come on even after an hour of tick-over, it sounds like you have the rarest of things - which is good!
The fan switch has a single spade connector on it, stick a length of wire between the spade connector on the end of the wire and earth - if all is well with the fan circuit the fan will spin. This doesn't confirm the fan switch itself is okay though, to do this you need to remove it and check its resistance at certain temperatures.
If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it though - fan switches very rarely go wrong. It sounds like you have a very healthy engine/cooling system there!

Re: Temp gauge, false reading???
sounds good, my uk spec bike also never see's much above the marker point around 70 and even in traffic on a hot day never see's more than 1/3rd to half way then cools v quickly when you get going.
both my rads are clean and clear, plus being a UK bike with oil cooler also possibly gives it the edge too.
makes such a massive difference when the rads are clear and as new. sounds like yours are too, keep them clean with a annual strip and clean.

Re: Temp gauge, false reading???
thanks for the replys guys, i forgot to say its a 1987 nc24 single rad and oil cooler.
i checked the rad fan circuit and worked when earthed.so its all good. i also tried earthing the thermostat housing to the engine temporarily to ensure the temp sender is getting a good eath but made no difference to reading.
bike is same barely comes off the cold marker most of the time. so this is a good thing? i thought might be doing harm. dont like to give it much till is warm but im unsure when its warm enough??
wont tick over when cold at the moment and wont accept choke when cold either?? realy starting to beat me on solving that one. would run right to when got it, loadsa flatspots cured that but now seems to run very rich when cold a tries to die of the throttle is left alone. dont mean to thread rape my own thread but one got one guy replying on the relevant thread
hes being very helpful though
cheers dave

Re: Temp gauge, false reading???
You can take the thermostat off and tets thatit opens and closes properly. See the Haynes book of lies for that.
Might be that the thing is stuck open and so you get an engine sturggling to warm up.

Re: Temp gauge, false reading???
Could you perhaps get it onto a fast idle and leave it for ten minutes - it should get bloody hot at 4k revs for 10 mins and you'll see if the gauge goes all the way round - or at least past half way.
Like you say - it might just be a cool running moto!

i had it on tick over for an hour balancing carbs and it only got to a quater, im just worried about giving it some when temp never reads that high, engine feels warm though???
cheers dave
