spare engine - how to test run?

Post by wig » Mon May 11, 2009 12:01 am

Ihave a couple of spare engines.
I want to sell them but want to know that they run first.i bought them as running, but want to hear then run if i am to sell them.
I tried today to get one running.
I do not know how to get the thing to run.
I ran it next to my bike, ie removed my carbs fitted them to spare engine, ran ht leads into the spare engine.
then starter motor turns the engine but i dont think the spark plugs are getting any spark.
Im guessing the cdi needs to know when to make the spark. I even tried ectending the three yellow wires from the doner engine into the main bikes loom.
do i also have to connect the wires from the left hand side of the engine?
it has 2 comming out and my engine needs 4!

or shall i just pull the engines to bits?

cheers anyone!

Do the coils need to be earthed? Or do they earth through the plugs?

I had this dilemma not so long ago, and just decided to change the engine in the frame, prob took as long to do the swap as it would have to stand and swear until I worked out why it wouldn't start.

What are you doing for rads etc?

I would sell them as they are - sold as seen. Was running, but you haven't ran them and so caveat emptor.

i just planned on seeing them fire up.
i dont want to sell rubbish and would like to see them run.
i was gonna test with no cooling etc just a rev and thats all

it would be useful to know if it was worth breakign the motor for parts but no one ever seems to be looking for honda engine bits

Even if you get it turning over it doesnt prove the engine is a good runner, like said before i would sell as sold as seen. Can see where youre coming from regarding not wanting to sell a duff one though.

I've always wanted to get a big fat 7+ litre V8 from a scrapyard in the states and just have it in the garage set up to run on the bench (with 8x straight through slash-cut header piipes about 2ft long of course) just so I can go out there and fire it up every now and again

Just thought I'd let you know
