When using a hrc style air scoop with the standard airbox, would it be a good idea to remove the part outlined (in red) for a more direct feed of cool air into the box?

yes i have mine removed aswell as the rubber snorkle but mines been setup to run like this as its a trackbike. ive known road bikes to run like crap if you remove the rubber flap. im sure someone will be along soon with an answer

I have not removed mine and I don't run an airbox lid. I found that with it removed it was a bit messy in the midrange./ I took this to be turbulence caused when the air was pouring into the tank cavity..but ths might not be as bad with a standard airbox lid.

I use a tray too - and my thoughts are that the tray will keep my carbs cool and my fuel cooler too.

I thought you had to remove it for it to work correctly. Munky, the RVF tray was already pre-cut, whereas the VFR isn't.

I would personally leave it all there, if you remove it the bike will need rejetting at a minimum (possibly more fiddling).

The front lower airbox has been cut on my road nc (rest of the airbox std), it surprised me how much it plays havoc with the fuelling when I was setting the carbs up.

The nc35 carbs aren't nearly so sensitive to changes like this (came with a shorter lower airbox like Viper says).

the part outlined is attached to the lower/bottom filter case or air filter housing......is this correct?

mine had been cut off before i bought the bike but i still had the plastic guard(with rubber flaps) that sits in front of the carbs and behind the top radiator......i don't see this in your pic.

my bike ran absolutely fine but it was re-jetted to suit the full exhaust system.i did however remove the plastic cover(with rubber flaps) and that was a terrible mistake,the bike ran very crap due to the excess air getting in.i believe that to be the case anyway,definately caused the bike to run extremely lean when up to speed!!!!

Maybe I've been lucky with my set-ups and guesses but I've never found issues with any modifications I've done to any of my NC's They all seem to work well with '30 carbs, '35 carbs, this cut, that cut, lower this, higher that, they've all ran really well, whereas Rhory raised the needles in his bike and the bike hated it...

Yes, it was attached to the lower part of the airbox. The "plastic flaps" you mentioned need to be removed to use the air tray.

I say was because I hacked it off a bit earlier oh well.

I have already rejetted to for a non-stock exhuast, guess I will just have to wait and see if this new mod ruins things.

If anything I have just lost a few more grams

just the rubber flaps or the whole plastic cover?

according to the parts manual it should all be there as stock and fit correctly.....
