what fork oil and air gap for super 4?

during the Winter my forks have started to ooze oil - the seals are obviously giving up

The Japanese to Russian to English manual that around on the web gives me:

- the volume of fluid needed - 499 cubic cms
- and the height of the spring - 338.2mm

but not the viscosity of oil (e.g. 5w, 10w or 20w) or the air gap that should be left.

I suppose the air gap will be evident by splitting 499 cm3 evenly between the 2 forks, but it would be nice to know for sure.

I'll be getting the seals and dust caps from wemoto.com for £15 and £8 respectively - if anyone knows anywhere cheaper I'd be grateful for the heads up

Hi Ian,
The air gap is 110 mm, measured from top of stanchion to oil level. Stanchion down in fork bottom of course. Says the manual for my CB400 NC36 but should be the same on yours. I remember that after I pored in 500 ml the gap was a bit more like 125 mm. Never mind. Manual also says 500 +/- 2.5 ml so that's your tolerance.
I vouch for the 10W too. Made the damping a bit firmer which I liked. The bike held itself very well even on very bouncy road.

got the forks back on the bike now - it's a pretty straight forward job all in all.

Driving the seal in was slightly time consuming, but by putting the old seal on top it's quite easy to tap it in.

the fork are nice and firm now. No diving when braking, although the front end was slightly bouncy on some bumps, so I might have to look at the adjusters.
