Workshop recommendations - south east
Hello all
As per thread title, anyone in the south east - who do you use? Going to need some engine work so more than oil change and mot.

I know this thread is 4 or 5 months old but I'm curious about matt74's bike. I know you talked about selling it, breaking it or fixing it a while back and it looks like you're going down the fix it route. Very wise.
So what's the situation at the mo? Did you find someone to work on the bike? Did you take up CB1pod70's offer?
My NC35 has repeatedly suffered from oiled up plugs, so I want to know if you found the problem.

Oily plugs is usually a sign of worn piston rings. Was a common issue on the 20v EXUP engine.

He was last on here early this month so we may not get a reply for quite some time if at all. Did you not get your nc35 sorted. Would a compression test not work or are they just for detecting if you have a cylinder head problem. Mine was a swine to start from cold and at times i gave in and took one of the others out and let it sulk in a corner (or rather i sulked) and the plugs where wet when i removed them.

My bike came back in early January. It was perfectly ok and running well, exactly as expected. I used it about once a week, which isn't bad considering the time of year. Got it out last Saturday (Feb 26th) and even though it had been on the Optimate (as always) it took 3 attempts to start it..a cold day so maybe that's why. I followed the starting procedure I'd been given to the letter. It took 7 or 8 mins before it would run without the choke, which is very unusual, it's normally half that. It sounded a bit rough but I took it out anyway. 40+ miles. It wouldn't pull well low down the rev range, although it seemed fine higher up. When stopped in first gear the revs hung around 2500-3000 (and stayed there even if neutral selected) and only dropped when the clutch was let out slightly. There was an occasional whiff of petrol when at a standstill but I couldn't decide where it was coming from. I wasn't happy with the way it was running so turned for home.
I checked the downpipes. The rear two were too hot to touch. The front two weren't, in fact I could rest my hand on them. Now awaiting a call from GF, to look at options.

On a positive note the rebuilt forks are brilliant. New oil and slightly stiffer springs have made a big difference. And the uncut undertray looks fab

I've been thinking that with us soon to be locked out of active participation on this forum, and my go-to 400-fixer Graeme France soon to be leaving these shores, maybe we should mention anyone you know who you would trust to work on these bikes..on your bike. The only other person I know of is Andrew Pocock (aka CB1pod70), down in Kent.
It would be good to know of anyone you have used personally, rather than heard about from a mate of a mate. I've had experience of two so-called experts, both recommended, neither of which, it turned out, really knew what they were doing. One even caused damage for which I had to pay to have fixed! I'm sure we could all relate similar tales. So if you can seriously recommend anyone, now will be the last chance to get their name on this forum and help the less mechanically able among us.
