NC30 starter motor removal

Post by slug675 » Sat Dec 12, 2020 5:50 pm

The bolt on my starter motor where the cable fits is loose and wobbly, can i just undo the two bolts on the starter and pull the whole starter out to try and fix it?

Not sure, not much knowledge on starter motors and the workshop diagram isn't overly clear. Looks like it may be possible to just tighten up the nut, we'll see, if not at least I know I can remove it easily now. Thanks for the info.

You were correct, thank you. All done up, hopefully nothing inside has been messed up. It's on a spare engine so don't know what's happened to it previously. Cheers.

Well starter was a non starter 😁 Eventually got it off the engine, never had one stuck on that bad before. Stripped it down and found this inside https://ibb.co/X4ZbNqG That would explain the non starting.
On another note, on the rear of the engine there is some writing which says EP65 in white pen, anyone guesses to what it means? Maybe a breakers mark. https://ibb.co/xFkyw2J

Ah that's a pita!!.should be able to clean it up and get it sorted,or there's plenty about used. The marks on the back of motor are factory and iirc correspond to the main bearing or bigend bearing sizes/code..

I bought a rebuild kit from Wemoto which includes the brush plate, brushes and some of the o ring seals, but not the one where the starter goes into the engine. It also includes various bushes and bearings which aren't required for the nc30. Sanded down the casings and sprayed them with smooth hammerite silver. It's now back on the engine and working fine https://ibb.co/mB5QDVH
I had the cam covers off while turning the engine over to check oil ways were clear as i found a large amount of silicon sealant blocking the oil strainer in the sump. https://ibb.co/nPNjTKs All oilways appear to be clear judging by the mess i made 😂

That would be good to know if it is the bearing sizes but i truly hope to never go down that road 😁

I hate silicon based instant gasket for that very reason - every engine I have worked on that has had it used to replace the cover gaskets has had a blocked strainer - it really is a false economy
