Coolant change, reuse washers ?

Post by Kenthammer » Fri May 22, 2020 11:01 pm

About to change the coolant on the NC30, just seen the price of the 3 drain bolt washers, nearly spat my beer out.

What’s the view on reusing the existing washers?

I am assuming they are crush washers, any alternatives ?

Are they the ones at £3.88 each? Can you not take the old ones to a local motorfactor and see if they can match them? Worth a try.

it is of course best practice to change it but you can probably reuse it without issue, i have many times just reuse and make sure it didnt leak after getting upto temperature,

Thanks guys, no they are not copper, probably steel.

£6.20 for a 6mm washer x 3, is really taking the proverbial.

Ended up reusing, as did buy them last time out and can’t believe I paid that much.

Half way through the job remembered I had promised myself not to take the front cylinder drain bolts out ever again out as they are a PITA to get back in with normal sized fingers, too late to remember so had to remove bottom rad to get access which has the added advantage of getting another 1/4 litre out of that rad, and just a thimble full out of the cylinder drain bolts.
All in all, got 2 litres out so nearly all of it.
