NC24 questions

Hello all,

I'm planning to buy a NC24 (maybe NC30). To avoid getting into trouble I've got some questions to prevent me from that.

Can I use NC30 engine gaskets for NC24 (both engines start with NC13 - ....) ? I didn't find gaskets on ebay. Are there online stores for such parts?

I'm interested in the Rothmans colour scheme. Has anyone tried to convert a NC30 into old Rothmans scheme with the aftermarket sticker set? I know there are newer Rothmans fairings (90s style) available from China.

I just reworked brakes and suspension on my bike. Are there any work shop manuals available for these bikes?

Best Regards

Axel

Save money - buy a NC30
easier & better in the long run ( & I have 2 x 24's)

I've owned both.

Get an NC30... prices have pushed them both up in recent years but the NC30 was light years ahead and has a lot more possibility from the offset.

Chassis / brakes / forks / suspension (espeically on the post 89 model nc30) in good working order are still quite useable today and you can even do some decent track times on one.

The NC24 while it had a great engine (firing order / cranks etc all different from NC30) has the typical mid 80s soft honda feel, 2 piston sliding calipers and generally feels a lot more looosey goosey in comparission.

Lot more aftermarket parts availabe for the NC30 and will cost you less and be worth more in the long run.

You can get a complete nc30 aftermarket cowel set from china for a couple hundred quid in rothmans scheme... wont be the standard of a factory kit but you can slap one on with a bit of fettling and not worry so much about damage...

oh and yes head gaskets can be made to fit, i think you might need to cut a hole or remove something but nothing rocket science.

I know a 30 year old motorcycle won't save me any money ... ;)

I like the older Rothmans style (like 85 NSR 500) -> http://world.honda.com/MotoGP/history/1 ... index.html
For the NC30 you get fairings in the newer Version -> http://world.honda.com/MotoGP/history/1 ... index.html

For the gas tank they only provide plastic covers?

You get the stickers for NC24, maybe I can fit them on a NC30 if I get a repainted (and therefore cheaper) one.

Here in Germany the NC24 wasn't sold. So spare parts will be a nightmare. If I complain, you told me before. In the Netherlands there are quite a few running. Maybe I have to learn dutch.

I have got a 1986 VF1000R, so I know about older suspension and brakes. I don't want to put the VFR on track. I will be somehow a "project" bike. Make VFR great again.

There are not so many spares anymore for the NC24... the engine while its the same casings is totally different inside..

even for road use the nc30 is miles miles miles better to ride... much better base to start from if yuo want to keep a bike.. much better choice of tyres availble... 17" rear conversion is easy if you want to do so.

if you spray up an nc30 you can fit whatever stickers you want

if you really must buy one then do so but having owned both for many years i wouldnt recommend an nc24 as a keeper if its not super cheap.. ie couple hundred euros... (which is what i paid for my last rothmans one actually...) now the prices are close to the nc30 prices its a no brainer to get an nc30

I solved the problem with spare parts ... buy one without engine.

I got the japanese repair instruction from Jim. First I was wondering because it was about NC21, than I looked to the last pages.

Now I got some more questions:

NC 21 has hydraulic clutch, can I use this on NC24 engine? (Engine has to fit CDI, is what I got from other threads.)
Can I put NC24 seats and extra cowling on NC21?
Can I put an NC24 (rear) swing arm into NC21? Do both have same tyre size?

Yes you can fit it - BUT WHY - it isn't any better >?

Don't know.

Don't know.

Yes, you can fit the hydraulic clutch, i've done that before.

You need all the parts.. clutch master and slave cylinders, clutch pipe and you also need the sprocket cover from the nc21 (the slave cylinder bolts to it)

Yes you can fit the NC24 seats onto the NC21 and vice-versa.. I had the NC21 twin seat on my NC24 as it was more comfortable and better for passagners... again you need the seat cowels and maybe some brackets to make it fit but same sub-frames.

Yes you can put the nc24 swing arm into the nc21 too... tyres are the same... swingarm is heavy and cumbersome.

The NC21 swingarm offers more customzation options (can get many more wheels that can be made to fit with appropriate spacers. the 3.5" NC24 rim is pretty limitied to the 130/70-18 tyres that came with it. (technically plenty of other stuff will fit on the rim but wont ride very good) you can even get a 150-60-18 on there depending on tyre maker but it might foul some stuff not be very pleasent.

I've seen a few NC21s running CBR600f wheels for 17" tyres- the early ones had a 130 rear, from the f2 it runs a 160/60... not sure if the wheel will fit in the swingarm and aligmnet etc but would be a good place to start if you want some decent modern rubber!

of course id pair that with the cbr600f2 front wheel too aha.

Why? ... Just to know my options. From last 4 weeks market observation it may be easier for me to get a NC21 than a NC24. On the other hand NC24 engines are on the market here in Germany and no NC21 (maybe seller didn't really know what he got). I'm close to dutch border, so I also have an eye on the dutch market. There are more bikes available.

I just bought a NC24 without engine and carbs to have the set of unique spare parts. One thought is to convert a NC21 into NC24.

From todays point of view I'm not interessted in wheel conversion. BT45 seems a good option for road use. I need to go through a technical inspection using different wheel sizes and that can be hard. (That was the reason for question 3 so I can change swing arm with same tire size). I did it with the VF1000R that got CBR600F2 (PC25) wheels. But that bike is much bigger and no big mechanical changes needed to be done.

Thanks for the answers. I'll come back here as soon as I got a bike.

Wie geht es dir un wo whonst du?
Ich bin auch in Deutschland, in der nähe der duch Grenze (nicht so weit von Aachen).

Back to English:

I personally think the NC30 suits the Rothmans scheme better than the others, and I like the later Rothmans design more......but maybe I am a bit biased

Many places that will paint a bike can also produce all the stickers you will need, but it can be expensive. The bike on the left has OEM Honda panels with a one off paint job. The place that did it sorted out all the stickers but, even about ten years ago when I had it done, it still cost more than £1000.
The bike one the right has a set of the Chinese copy fairings on. With some work they could be made to fit better and the do look ok but I never bothered too much about getting a perfect fit as this was my weekend thrash or track day bike. Don't forget you would need to get your tank painted to match, and that is also not cheap.

Wenn Sie ein NC30 kaufen, habe ich eine Garage voll mit Ersatzteilen, die ich verkaufen muss (Gabeln, Auspuffe, Räder usw.) ;)
