Running on 3 cylinders

Post by watafu » Sun Apr 12, 2015 2:55 pm

Ok totally my own doing but having some problems sorting this out now. Installed a cbr600rr shock and in order to do so, had to move the ignition coil, which initially I did by just bending the bracket and having it attached to the original bracket on one end and a wire bolted on running to the main earth point for the battery. Original wire was 17amp but upgraded that to a 27amp cable.
Also had to raise the battery up a bit which meant making a new earth wire which is also 27amp. Now, while it was setup this way it was running great, probably the best its run in years, but I had to alter the location of the iginition coil which I ended up removing from the bracket and zip tying it to the subframe....yea not pretty, but figured as long as it was earthed on the other side, it would be fine.
Cue the problems...First the bracket that holds it in place snapped off so there was no going back, secondly...only running on 3 cylinders now...Its the longest HT lead thats causing the issues and have tested the resistance of the coil which is all in spec. Swapped the spark plugs about which didn't help and even swapped the ht-leads over briefly in a desperate attempt....which also failed. I know its the rear right hand cylinder as its exhaust pipe is not heating up anything like the other ones.
My train of thought is that possibly the coil pack needs a direct connection to the frame as the 27amp wire is not enough?? Or it could also be related to the earth lead for the battery. I have a spark on both plugs but the longer ht leads plug is deffo weaker so I can only assume that not enough power is being put through and its just taking the path of least resistance although even that doesnt sound quite right..
Any and all help appreciated, need my ugly baby back on the road asap ^_^

I'd be thinking about swapping the coil packs over to see if the issue persists. Also. measure the leads as they have a spec too.

Will try it tomorrow when I have some spare time. Seems that this bike is just letting go now :( Clutch has just started slipping badly, oil leaks from nowhere and just generally running like a bag of shit out of nowhere...fml
