Crankcase

Post by Jac-al » Mon Jul 07, 2014 2:06 pm

hi,

Ive got an NC30 motor with a cracked lower crankcase, ive got a good bottom half of an NC24 motor
I wondering if the crankcases are the same so i could use the nc24 on the nc30

Hi, I think the cases are machined as a pair so you shouldn't really use different ones, tho you you try it to make sure everything lines up, with it been a Honda they may do. I don't know if you can line bore nc stuff and get oversize bearings.
Sorry can't be much help.
Cheers

Ok, then does anyone know if NC30 heads, cams etc would be compatible on a NC24

Neo can help more on this, I think the heads are the same, but cams will be different do to the 180 degree in the 24 and the nc30's been 360 degree

I supposed I can join in on this thread.

What is wrong with the NC30 motor, is it just a cracked crankcase? How did it get cracked? Is there any damage to the motor?

The easiest and cheapest way would be to get the crack repaired, by either a decent welding shop or by using something like lumiweld.

The short answer to your question, which I think would apply to most people who even have to ask "can it be done" is no it cannot.

Trying to hybrid these two motors together probably can be done if you have the right tools, skillset, knowledge and budget but it certainly won't be the cheap or easy or even sensible option.

The crankshafts are different so the cams are not interchangable, the valvetrain is totally different too. I can't remember if the heads just bolt on or they need to be modified to even fit, but they may need shimming out, which would require precision cut shimming material measure accuratly.

Depending on what parts you use you might have to get creative, NC30 crank in NC24 engine or vice versa, but your probably going to need new crank bearing shells too, along with a new set of shims if its NC30 head etc.

Not for the feint harted or mechnically challenged or anyone who isnt really familiar with these engines and rebuilding process.

The only real reason I can think of for somebody wanting a hybrid motor would be to have the locknut adjustable valves instead of shims for some racing engine where valve clearances are frequently adjusted without the need for a buucket of shims.

The reason im askin is the NC30 motor with cracked crankcase might be damaged. I was told when i bought it that it runs fine but it only starts for a few seconds then dies. Ive pulled the heads they look ok besides alot of carbon build up, even the pistons look good so i dunno what else it could be. Its not carb or elec related
