Rusted tank

Since having a dodgy issue with the carbs i thought it best to check out the tank and found it has rusted at the bottom of the tank near the petcock.
Having trawled through the internet i tried the viegar and salt mix so i filled it up , shook like crazy then left it on the bench. Next morning the tank had dumped the vinegar all over the floor but not from where i bunged the petcock hole :x
Where it had lifted crud from the tank it had deposited it around the tank so ive dne what i was with water and left it with wd40 to stop further rust prevention.
So what is the best way to clear the tank for use?
Im thinking diesel, shake loke crazy and drain maybe? Or just bite the bullet and get some por15 to line the tank but will this effect the line at the top of the tank?
I must admit throwing in the towel and buying a new tank has also crossed my mind

Any of the available rust 'treatments' should do OK.
I've used Jenolite with very good results before.
Whatever you use, you need to get rid of all the loose flakes, and then de-grease it thoroughly.

Once that's done, make sure the area still has enough thickness left, if the corrosion was really bad, you may find there's not much more than the paint left!
Give it a light tapping all over the affected area with a small ball-peen or tack hammer, if it dents easily then it's probably knackered.

The tanks pretty solid as it wasnt enough rust to affect the integrity of the tank.
Im hoping the photos will show what kind of rust im looking at

The yellow stuff will be the oil to stop further rusting but the rust is fairly evident.
Am i being a bit fussy?
Now my carb rubbers have arrived i can hopefully make a few in roads :grin:

Sorry mate but the ebay link is dead but ive heard bilt hamber clay bars are supposed to be good.
The link for the deox is very interesting - thats the result im after

have a look at this guy's work... he seems to have all the steps and considerations all lined up. and he does it all with lots of pictures (for the visual-learners among us).

Easier solution...use coke not the white powder but regular coca cola. Cheap, easy and functional!

I wouldn't worry too much about that much rust, most old tanks probably have just as much in them.

Thank you for posting that up as it shows the prep needed for the por15 route. Maybe a little extreme but I must admit I like the results so if I have to venture down that route that's what I'll be following .

I've heard about the coke method but I also found this:

They mention the coke method , the phosphoric acid part which I tried before but it didn't work so maybe it just wasn't a strong enough concentration of acid. They mention diluted caustic soda to clean then hydrochloride acid for the rust followed by phosphoric acid for the final touch. I'll give this a go on my next day off (whenever that is) and if no luck then the por15 will be utilized.

I would leave it but at the back of my mind I'll be thinking about it as I'm riding. I would for an inline fuel filter but heard more bad than good

Tried it myself first time on a moped restoration (my very first moped nut and bolt project) back in 1993. I could not get few parts of the frame and engine off...mind you the moped was a 1969 Puch MV50 3-gear speed that never ever was taken apart. A bath in plenthy coke for at least one day and rinse it properly did the jobs perfect! I trust this method and coke is cheap. :grin:
