CDI/electrical problem.

Morning gents, I think I have diagnosed the electrical issue with my nc30. I had a very bad connection on the negative terminal of the battery, and popped the ign fuse in the fusebox. It was repaired, and still I got no spark. Ignition control unit was swapped. Sparked, and bike ran. Now, my concern is why did the original ignition control unit blow? Would a very bad earth do this? I don't want to pop my friends cdi recovering the bike to my house!

I'm not sure a bad earth would kill an ECU, but is the charging system ok? I think if that's overcharging the battery, it can take out the ECU as well as other components.

Yeah deffo check the charging voltages like speedy says. it should be about 14-15 volts at 5k rpm, any more than that and theres something wrong with the reg/rec. Is the rest of the ignition system standard? ie not fitted with stick coils or anything?
Cheers
Ian

Getting 13.8v at around 5000rpm. Sounds about right?

Yeah sounds good to me, have you tried it with lights on and off? Maybe worth measuring the resistance of the coils too.
