Clutch dragging lever all in and disengaged

Hi,

Odd problem, probably present on my ex track bike (prior to my ownership) since I've owned it. When at idle in neutral, no problems. When clutch in, in gear, engine revs drop after 2-5 seconds and usually kills engine. However when releasing the clutch lever, it doesn't bite until about halfway through the travel, and I have a small amount of free play at the end...what does this mean? It can also be difficult at random times to change gear, but will slide into neutral every time with revs up at 2-3k and light pressure. What in my clutch is buggered, and does anyone have a spare!:-D

Could be warped plates (the metal ones).
Whip them out and check with a straight-edge, or better still, lay them on a piece of glass and check for gaps.

Thanks! So drain oil and whip them out - you are talking about the metal rings that the clutch fibers go in between?do I need any gaskets? Never done the clutch before..

You may need a new clutch cover gasket and the special peg spanner for the castle nut on the shaft.

Check the clutch drum for wear grooves made by the clutch plate ears.
The plates can jam in the grooves but they can be filed out smooth usually.

how long did yours sit before riding or has it sat for long periods of time perhaps with bad oil? I experienced this after an oil change and a bike that sat for almost 10 months. after riding it and around 100 miles, my exact symptoms went away. I have not checked any drums, springs, plates, clutches yet, but i don't feel the need after some advice on this site that the bike just needed to be ran as it was intended.

It could probably do with an oil change - yeah it did sit for 6-9 months I think, right after an oil change - have oil and forte sitting here to change but just haven't in case I have to drain it again - on a side note - oil doesn't need draining for valve clearances does it?
