Maybe a flat or duff battery. These bikes will be very hard to start on worn batteries, it does not take many presses of the starter to lose sufficient power needed for a good start. Charge it and see if it quickly loses charge while starting. If it does best replace before looking further into problems. Also if its not been started in a while it could be a fact to consider as these bikes are very cold blooded and need some pampering to get them running again.

I'd check the starter solenoid/relay. It's situated just below the seat and has a green top. Mine was kaput and my bike would just click when I tried to start it with a new battery.
