NC30 Chinese stanchions longer than standard ... issue?

Post by tigerclaw » Sat Aug 10, 2013 7:14 pm

My bikes original stanchions had been bent and straightened, when I got the bike they were still a little bent and bulged around where the had been straightened. Because of this I bought a set of chinese stanchions, but the ones I bought are longer than the originals. I saw in another post that stanchions come in 553 or 560 mil length and mine are about 6 mil longer than the standard version so they must be 560? When I rebuilt the forks I put Rick O internals into the forks.

What is the effect of the longer stanchion? I saw someone else post that the forks have 11 mil less travel and effectively have 5 mils more preload but I am not sure that this is right because the internal length of the fork is longer, so I would expect longer travel and that the have less preload (ie the other way around) but I dont fully understand the fork internals so I may well be wrong.

I am hoping that all I need to do is set them up with 6 mils sticking through the top triple clamp / yoke?

Thanks

IMHO you would need to poke 6mm through the top triple clamp and the increase the spring preload 6mm to offset the extra length. he amount of travel is set by the dimensions of the damping cartridge and thus should remain unchanged.
