My crank code is "B1" and my con rod code is "A1" and according to my manual, the selection I have is right, so I know that much. Our Honda dealer want me to take out a second mortgage

End of the day, you should measure the actual clearance and select the shell based on thickness, rather than rely on Honda colour codes and crank letters. Besides, whether you go by Haynes or the Honda manual, you end up with different colours and even then, they don't take into account wear.
I ended up using different colour codes to what was specified for my crank/cases/rods, but my clearances are bang on.
I would say though that for a critical part like bearing shells, I'd always go with OEM.
