Rattly front (Videos now up)

Post by benny » Sat May 04, 2013 7:04 pm

I've had a rattly front end (sounds like it's come front the mid/front) of the bike whenever I go over a bump, sounds like something hitting something. I think I've identified the problem to a wobbly front Y piece (the bit with the mesh infrontof the rads) it's only attached at the top (to the headlight mounts) i realised i actually attached it wrong and the side lugs weren't tucked in correctly to the side fairings, I've fixed this and it still rattles, upon further inspection I realised the rad pipes and what looks like an electrical component is pressing on the left side fairing and pushing it out, i also have a lot of bolts missing.

Image
That electrical looking thing in the middle and the pipe on the right both push the fairing out.

Image
The missing bolts, this side doesn't look so bad now I've popped it back into the correct place. (not pictured)

More missing bolts

Image
This is how much that rad pipe and electrical thing push the fairing out.

Image
Another missing bolt, this was what I originally thought was the problem as i thought it would be this panel flapping around due to only being attached at the top.

To be honest this panel isn't actually that wobbly so it may not even be the route of the sound! But it is annoying me about the poor fitment so any help is appreciated.

Its hard to tell from those pictures and im a little sleepy to make a good decision right now but I can see that the Y piece is cracked... perhaps the radiator is bent from a crash which is causing the fairing to stick out

They should fit together really well.. there are 3 screws in the front V piece.. one at the bottom and one each side, the top part is held in by push in plastic plugs.

Mine is attached by two nuts and bolts to the headlight part of the fairing and that's it. It's cracked but had been repaired.
These aren't the original plastics to the bike so it's unlikely any damage to the plastics should reflect damage underneath

So I moved the headlight mod and it all seems to fit better now, hoping this has fixed the rattle but haven't really got time for a ride today or tomorrow :/

So the rattle is still just as bad, makes a right noise when rolling off the accelerator. It's definitely that front panel but I can't find a way if attaching it, any ideas?

Rattly front - Radiator panel

Any ideas? I cant think of anyway to secure this as the attachments all seem to be broken, or is the above photo how it should be?

So we now think it's the bottom rad (pending judgement on the currently uploading video)
Here is a video of my wobbly plastics:

Ignore the idle at the start, I sent the video to Alex, i noticed when i got home it was idling unusually high and kept revving up to about 2300 then dropping, but by the time i got my camera out it was pretty stable at 2000 (normally idles about 1700/1800). The plastics wobbles are shown after the idle bit.
Ok here's my wobbly rad video:

Just thought I'd post a better description.
The rattle/clash/bang. Happens when I go from accelerating to decelerating, e.g. when I've pulled off my drive then stop of the end of the road. Or go over a bump. It's definitely something moving forwards and hitting another object.

The most common rattle and clunking at the front,he front mudguard,Where the brackets slip over the fork lowers.
A way to fix this is remove the guard and brackets wrap some electrical tape around the fork legs and replace mudguard.
Or spread some silicone around the fork leg and slip the brackets back over.
