Im gonna dump my oil over the weekend however my bikes stood idle for a fortnight and all oil should be sitting in the sump ready to unload.
Now in the past ive ran the engine up to temp, switched off and drained hot, however that would mean some oil would be sat around the engine.
So my question dump hot or cold?

You cant beat a good unloading, or a hot dump!!!!!
Anyway, i'd just let it drain as is mate, just leave it over night to get the last drips out..............

Re: Changing Oil - Hot or Cold?
I always figure if it's up to running temp, if anything goes wrong you're going to end up the scalding hot oil all over the place and the possibility of nasty burns. I just run the bike for a few mins so that the oil and cases have some heat in them, and then wait 5-10 mins for it to settle down and collect together, then drop it. Leaving it for a while and doing something else ensures you get the majority out. You could wait hours and hours for the last few ml to come out, but even then there's always going to be some left. After all, the book say 2.4L without the filter changed, 2.5L with and 3.0L when filling a dry engine. If you're changing it a regular intervals, you're not going to end up with loads of old oil stuck in there is my opinion. Also, I wonder if you'll be doing any damage if you throw fresh, ambient temp oil into red hot cases? I've often thought the same thing about flushing coolant with a hose after the engine has run....

Always changed the oil cold and never had a problem on any of the bikes we have or have had

Re: Changing Oil - Hot or Cold?
Well, that means that the day before, you used your bike, so, when you last parked your bike your engine was hot, so leaving it over night until the engine cooled off, most of the engine oil is already down at the sump.porndoguk wrote:.... however my bikes stood idle for a fortnight.....

I don't think you can drain more oil than that.

Re: Changing Oil - Hot or Cold?
change it hot
a 5-10 minute ride doesnt get the oil hot
I always change mine 30-60 mins after a decent ride
this ensures that everything is nice and hot and the oil has cooled enough not to burn
I crack the sump plug and start and run the motor for 30 secs and this ensures that the oil is fluid and all contaminants and back held in suspension of the oil rather than sitting on the bottom of the sump
