Slight problem fitting S1000RR shock on RVF400 NC35...

Post by Tossi » Thu Apr 11, 2013 1:03 pm

Well,

Getting my RVF taken apart for powder coaters and decided to fit the BMW shock first so I can file it away first etc before the frame is powder coated. But A slight problem is the top eye of the bmw shock wont line up as it's too tall. I know everyone I seen had done this to the VFR so I assumed the RVF would be fine. It turns out that is not the case. Pics are attached.

Anyone any ideas? I could elongate the eyes on the frame but that would raise the rear? Or would it lower it? My plan was to also fit the HRC linkage but now I'm starting to doubt this whole situation!

Anyways, any tips or ideas are appreciated!

(excuse poor photos, taken off phone, and some pics are off my spare RVF frame so it's not just a one off fault!)

I think its because your the first to try it on an RVF to my knowledge only VFR owners have tried it.

The RVF has a different top mount does it not? Other wise file some more off the top of the shock

How much is not that expensive? haha

And where'd you get it done?

£10 IIRC I just got someone off the forum to machine it, sorry can't remember who it was a long time ago but any machine shop will be able to do it.

At some point I will be fitting a BMW shock to my rvf so as soon as I have a shock in my hands ill measure up to have one made but that won't be anytime soon.

Ah right cheers. It's just a pain cos it's so damn close! I presume bringing the holes of the shock mount down further will in essence be lengthing the shock ths causing the rear to be raised even more?

Did you have any issues with height change with the HRC linkage?

I would remove some of the metal for the top of the shock eye,
It looks like there is plenty there,And maybe a tad of the frame.
Even if you got one made it would have to have a reduced eye diameter.

The stock mount does have a massive blob of weld on the inside which you could do without if you made a new mount so it won't necessarily increase the ride height.

No change in ride height that I've noticed from using the hrc link but you do need a spring that's a lot softer, the 600lbs spring I ordered is still too stiff for me.

But then how would I add the thread to the mount without adding a bolt anyways?

But is the stock BMW shock not around 500lbs? So might be ok from stock with the HRC linkage?

Yeah it is, to be honest I cocked up when I ordered the spring but thought I'd try it anyway, with the damping wound right off its rideable and maybe ok for the track but not for road use.

The mount I had made had a countersunk bolt welded in place so it maximum clearance. Do you think the shock will bolt in if the underside of the mount was flat? I will look into getting some made as im going to need one sooner or later.
