Jammed NC23 Gear Lever?

Hi all,
I've had a couple of problems with my gear lever recently, it started off when the bolt holding the foootrest to the rear set went loose, and the footrest turned upside down on the M3, since then the gear level has had a bit of trouble returning to it's neutral position, normally a nudge in the right direction and it would sort itself out.
Yesterday it started jamming itself completely, I knocked it into first and it jammed down, any attempt to change up resulting in it ending up in neutral, I had to pull over, yank the lever up into second, where it stayed almost vertical, and managed to get to college in second, slipping the clutch when setting off.
I don't understand it, last night I took the footrest off of the rearset and it seemed fine, I'm assuming the lever pivots around the footrest? I didn't manage to get it off, but I used a lot of GT85 and WD40 and it seemed ok, but this morning its worse than before.
What's my best course of action? I imagine I need to drift the footrest off of the gear lever, is there some sort of bearing inside? Or maybe I should check the return on the gearbox? Although when the rear set was off, pulling and pushing on the rod seemed to make it spring back as normal.
