UK NC30 engine overhaul.....

Right guys after much thought im keeping the nc for a bit longer, so i've decided to completly overhaul the engine in the new year, i've owned the bike for 7 years and has been serviced every year, oil filter plugs, since i've owned it,

My question to you expets is, what do you recomend for a complete overhaul, as i'll be taking the bike to my local bike shop and ill be presenting them with a list,

i had in mind all fluids, filters carbs,

If you mean getting the whole motor stripped down an rebuilt i think RLR will do it for £600 plus parts so your probably looking at a grand plus, not cheap but worth the money IMO. If thats too overbudget then maybe just refurb the heads, valve steam seals, lap the valves in, get the casting flash removed, get all of the tolerances measured and then set the valve clearances, all of that is what im in the process of doing right now.

Even that wont be cheap your looking at £60 for head gaskets, just under £100 for valve stem seals, plus the labour if your getting a garage to do it which is probably in excess of £250. If your confident with the spanners then its worth doing yourself to save the money.

Whats the mileage, and condition of the bike btw?

mileage is 35k miles, runs great,

reason for the work is i want to rebuild/overhaul the whole bike engine , suspension body work as im aware the bike getting on abit now, want to make it fresh

Dude. If it has 35,000 on the clock and you've serviced it annually for the last 7 years she's practically brand new.

Buy an engine that's shit itself and rebuild that. Don't spend money on an engine that is already sweet.

Well, I wouldn't anyway. If you are set on it though, I would also do what Kieran has suggested in his second paragraph.

With 35k on it id say its barely even worth replacing the stem seals and lapping the valves, wait until you have put another 10k on it and then do it. Or ill swap you my engine thats allready had to heads stripped and you can do the work on that if you like

But on a serious note with that mileage on the clocks id just be checking the valve clearances for now, my motor that had done 67k recorded but probably alot more didnt look completly terrible inside, stem seals have gone pretty hard, and the exhaust valves definatly needed lapping in, inlets where fine however. Just goes to show how long these bikes can go for.

If it isn't broken - don't fix it. Joking apart if the engine is sweet, just check the valve clearances, possibly swap the Reg Reg for a more substantial item and give the bike a good service, Oil filters etc etc. If you are feeling the need to let rip with the spanners sort the suspension and possibly replace a few bearings (but again only if needed). If all of that is good, you can spend time and money on the cosmetics...but no anodized tatt please

By the sound of this you don't intend to be doing much of the work yourself - so save your money and just ride the thing. The time (or temptation) to spend money will come quick enough.

thanks for the advice guys, i think it will be a full service with checking values and carbs etc, (spare money on shock and fork rebuild)

they'll be no 'tat' on my bike, its 100% orginal now, just how i like it, people say its mint when they see it, but to me it aint, but lets not comment about that subject after what ive seen on other threads lol

If it's been serviced every year it sounds like it's been looked after properly. I presume being bothered to service it regularly also means you've had the valve clearances done at the right intervals, and carbs adjusted every now and then to make sure they're nice and clean, and properly balanced? If so, as everyone else says, unless the engine sounds sick, or is running rough, leave it! You don't want ot be sticking pattern parts into the engine, and the OE gaskets and seals cost an absolute fortune, so it would just be wasted money. If you really want to spend some money on making the bike 'better' and it's burning a hole in your pocket, why not look at the forks and rear shock, and see if you can get the bike setup perfectly for your particular riding style and weight, assuming you've not already done that? For the cost of someone decent to rip the engine apart, replace all the gaskets and seals, and do all the head work, you could buy a silly spec rear shock and get an upgrade kit for the forks. Or you could just leave it alone and buy a project bike to tinker with...
