Scrubbing in new tyres
I have put a new BT92 on the front of my NC30 but can't get it scrubbed in cos of the shit weather.
The first time I used it I had done about 30 yards in the wet when I touched the front brakes and lost the front!! I managed to save it from hitting the road but then went the rest if the way to work at about 20mph! In total the tyre has done about 12 miles and the middle of the tyre looks ok but both sides are shiny and slippy. I daren't go round a corner incase I drop it. Does anyone know if I can get rid of the newness off the tyre without just going out and pushing it? I've even thought about attacking it with the sander just to get the tyre worn a bit! I think the missus is getting fed up with me taking her car every day!

Re: Scrubbing in new tyres
I once used to get that Halfords wheel cleaner spray and some hot water to get rid of the release agent as I was paranoid about a lack of grip on brand new tyres. Didn't do it with the last few sets of tyres, regardless of weather, and never really had any issues. Perhaps you were unlucky and it would have happened on the old tyre, but you've got the stigma of new tyre syndrome?

Re: Scrubbing in new tyres
What is it that they put on the tyres? Could it be washed off if I used hot soapy water and a Brillo pad?
And yes I have definitely now got new tyre syndrome!!!!

Re: Scrubbing in new tyres
Before the tyre goes into the mould, the mould has stuff called release agent put on it to stock the tyre sticking to it. Think greasing a baking tray. So, the tyre comes out nice and easy, but it's covered with a thin layer of really slippy stuff, which, when the rubber has no texture because it hasn't been used, means there's not much grip until it's come off. My friend's workshop used to have a Dunlop poster in it advertising the tyres, and recommending 100 miles of careful running to get the stuff off before giving a handful. Soap and a brillo will probably work, just make sure you get the soap off of it'll probably have the same effect!

Re: Scrubbing in new tyres
Contrary to popular belief its not a release agent, its a protective coat,
When i had the guy from bridgestone at my house he said its a coating so when the tyres are stored they dont crack deteriorate, hr said theres no such thing as release agent

Re: Scrubbing in new tyres
Since you have already worn the new tyre in its just a case of slowly leaning the bike progressivly each time, you want to keep a portion of the worn tyre in contact with the road and wear slightly more in each time.
Unless its rainy, you havent let the tyre warm up (loose some air out of it..) or your ham fisted then you will be fine.
Pick a nice day where there is at least some sun, find a quiet carpark or open land and do some circles leaning a little more each time.
Local tyre fitter by me used to offer to scrub them in, would go out and about 10 minutes later come back with them scrubbed and ready to go.

Re: Scrubbing in new tyres
the tyre is not worn in at all yet. I have only done about 12 mile on it in the wet at about 30mph and keeping as vertical as possible! I was hoping for a dry day today so I could go out and put some mileage on it but it rained and I really dont feel safe in the wet. As I said in a previous post earlier this week the tyre has never been used but is 8 year old so I think that is also playing on my mind as well as losing the front a few days ago. I dont have any confidence in the wet on it but would like to get out in the dry to see how it feels. Unfortunately this is England... in November... its only gunna get wetter.

Re: Scrubbing in new tyres
I've found the problem with the tyre, where the sticker with the tyre details on has been removed it has left a very gunky black residue that does not want to come off! this obviously reduces the grip when i'm on this part of the tyre and must have been on that part when I lost the front. I am now trying to get it off but its being very stubborn. I've spent about an hour so far and not got rid of much. it has really bonded with the tyre. I have had my heater pointed at the tyre to warm it up, I have tried soaking it in hot water and I have tried just rubbing it very hard (fnarr fnarr).
I have just seen on a website that carb cleaner works so I might try this next, I'm just very dubious about putting chemicals on the tyre incase it doesnt react well.
Any suggestions?????

carb cleaner works a treat!! just hope the tyre doesnt deteriorate ant quicker cos of the chemicals??
Just been out and done a 30 mile little trip to see how the tyre handles and although I didnt push it much (its only 5 degrees outside brrrr) it felt much better. hopefully its sorted now.
