nc23 starting prob-surely not i hear you gasp!

Post by bodge-no-more » Wed Sep 19, 2012 8:31 pm

Hey all, as I have wittered about before i am trying to drag my old triarm back from the dead and have hit another snag. No Spark, no fuel pump. I have bypassed the relay and got it spinning but no activity when the relay is plugged in. Tried the original, the "i won't throw it away it may come in useful" one from a previous donor bike and bought a new one. Admittedly it's for a gullarm but same part number stamped on the back other than being a cf322 4.2 rather than a 8.something. The bike spins like a good un but no joy. Is there a way to test the relay(s) as i can't believe all three are duds?? If so, where from there? My time off has ended and i am trying to get this done in the evenings and occasional weekends, normally with a hangover :) Any help greatly appreciated....

I think the bigger issue is that you have no spark.

Is the cdi a working unit? Coil wiring all hooked up correctly? Crank trigger pick up properly installed? Spark plugs good? Etc.

Resolve the pump/relay issue when you have spark.

Hey Cammo, thanks for the interest. I went with the fuel relay as an easy fix after a post on here said that it retarded the spark as well as cut off the fuel pump. So far with my crappy volt meter (nothing to measure resistance) I have done continuity checks on:

Run/Stop switch
Ignition barrel wiring
Diode
Clutch switch

All checks out as per Haynes and/or wiring diagram. I get my new super duper volt meter tomorrow so will be checking stator/pick up coils, main coils and HT leads hoping to find something that isn't the CDI. Anything else that someone who has mastered monkey see monkey do troubleshooting can manage??

Just out of interest, how did you conduct a continuity test without a resistance function on your meter?
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

ERRRRRRRRRM, all the old meter had was ac/dc battery and circuit with a wavy needle incating volts and yes/no. Having checked the pickup coil as per haynes, it is showing 500 ohms when set to 2k so well outside tolerance.
Will keep going and see what else turns up..more tea and roll ups!
