NC30 Indicator problems

Post by spongy.bob » Wed Sep 05, 2012 7:09 pm

My indicators have stopped working. the relay clicks rapidly. I've checked all the indicator connections, changed the relay and inspected the bulbs with nothing obviously wrong. Should I just replace the bulbs and see what happens? Any advice welcome.

Cheers, Rob.

I'm pretty sure that a rapidly clicking relay indicates (sorry!) that there's no load on it. In my experience, if a single bulb has gone, it's partner comes on and stays on when you select that side. If both sides do the same, there's probably something more than bulbs wrong - surely all four won't blow at the same time?

With only one bulb functional the relay operates faster than normal and the lamp thus flashes faster. No functional lamps then the relay will not operate.

My best guess is that the handle bar switch has a high resistance contact fault that allows the relay to operate but cannot supply sufficient current to operate the lamps. A liberal application of WD40 to the switch would be a easy place to start or try measuring the resistance between the GREY and BLUE wires that run to the switch when right turn selected, should read less than 1-2 ohms.

thanks chaps. I'll give the resistance test a go.

All 4 bulbs fail to light?

Sounds like your switch is duff. They often get shitted up inside, take the screws out of the housing and carefully take it apart, you dont need to strip it down much further yet.

Blast the indicator part out with some wd-40 like magg said or some contact cleaner etc.

If it makes an improvement it is well worth taking it apart further, note where everything comes from and cleaning it up properly. Hopefully it is just gunge / grime and not ruined.

I cleaned it up last year and found bits of a spider in there. I cleaned it up again last night just to be sure and worked the switch a few times, but with no joy. I also checked the resistance between the blue and grey wires whilst signaling right and got 1 ohm resistance.

As I've tried another relay with the same result, I'm assuming its likely to be the switch? I run UK spec headlight bulbs with a relay on the main beam. Could that be causing the problem?

Thanks for all your help guys.

If you're using uk spec globes you should be using a low beam relay, it's the low beam current draw that's the difference.

There's a good chance it's burnt the switch out, probably best to take it apart fully and check it out they're notorious for failing.

1 ohm would indicate that the turn signal switch contact is ok. Remove the turn signal relay from its socket and link the grey wire contact to the black/brown wire contact in the socket. Select right then left turn and check to see that the appropriate left and right side lamps turn ON.

Low beam headlight circuit is not directly related to the turn signal circuit, although as Cammo said, if you are using 55/60 W lamps without a relay you are asking for trouble with the Hi/Lo beam switch.

Ye, sorry, I am using a relay on the low beam but I'll check the wiring on that too to be sure.

Magg, am I just testing for continuity between the sockets?

Quick update. the headlight relay is working fine.

Magg, when you say to link the contacts, is that just a case of putting some wire between the two contacts, or am I using a multimetre?
