Flywheel Removal

The new engine I have (out of the frame) needs a stator. My old engine is in the frame with everything disconnected but the drive chain (more or less). I've put the bike in various gears and put all of my 11 stone weight on the back brake, but when I try and undo the big flywheel nut, it still won't come off, I just can't jam the back wheel enough.

Is it possible to do this without having to purchase (no, I can't make one) a flywheel holder? Was hoping to get the stator transplanted in to the new engine this afternoon but I'm stuck now!

Just had a go at this with a helper (see: Dad).

I put all of my weight on the back brake, pulling up on the frame to put even more pressure on it, my leg was shaking I was pushing so hard. Dad put all his weight in to pulling the torque wrench, there was a lot of resistance but all that happened is the entire flywheel rotated and the bolt didn't get any looser.

No prob, yeah someone else told me to try an impact driver, I can't afford to buy one though so looks like I'm stuck until I find a local that has one!

Buy a 24" breaker/knuckle bar for about £25 id be lost without mine. That will shift it, whack some heat on the nut before you try shift it.

How I did mine.

I placed some thick rubber over the back of swing arm I then got a metal bar and threaded it through the sprocket and disc. I applied pressure so the bar rested against the rubber not to damage the swing arm. Then got a socket on the flywheel with a long bar and it crackd open.

I just tried that ibby, I put a long bar through the wheel and over the swingarm, then put the other end on an axel stand to stop the wheel from turning. I put all my weight on the wrench and all it did was almost bring the bike off the rear paddock stand! The entire flywheel turns, then when you decide you've had enough and let go, it unwinds back to where you started.

I need to try and find somewhere local with an impact driver I can borrow :/

Do what ibby said, with an 1/2" or 3/4"T bar,Get yourself a nice piece of brass or alloy bar round or square,
Pull the T bar in the direction to undo,Hold this tention, place the alloy(brass)bar against the head of T bar and hit with a big hammer,If it's an old T bar you could just hit it directl without the (alloy brass bar).

Funny, but I am trying the same process to get the rear nut off of my Ducati so I can change the sprocket. That mutherfuker is on really tight! I actually broke the ratchet on my wrench.

To remove the stator bolt I dont even use the brake or hold the flywheel.

An impact driver (they can be had for 10 gbp) or an air gun impact wrench will make it loose without having to straing at all.
