chain slack part 2!

How hard can it be?

Further to my earlier post regarding chain slack/adjustment etc I took the bearing holder out of the swing arm and there was a fair amount of debris in there, stones, grit and even an exhaust gasket.

Gave it a good clean, filled the hole in the swingarm with expanding foam as suggested and put it all back together, all good.

However on adjusting the chain I find with 15mm ish of slack the chain touches the underside of the slider, to stop it tocuhing the slider I need to tighten it more and then get about 10mm slack.

So does it tocuh the slider when adjusted correctly, or am I measuring it wrong, or is something else amiss?

i just make sure the slack is between 15-25mm measured inline with the rim of the wheel or there abouts (halfway between sprockets) while on the side stand, i think it does just touch the slider if pushed up but i dont worry about it as long as the chain is within the tolerance stated

Remember the chain tightens when you sit on the bike

chain is going to tighten with you on the bike , dont' worry about it touching, it's got tension on it when the bikes running, there isn't somebody pushing it.

Have you got it in the right way round? You can fit the hub upside down....

yeah check the hub is at 6 o'clock and not in a 12 o'clock position , if you get what i mean

Apologies for not acknowledging these, I was on holiday
It must be the right way up, at 6 o'clock turning the holder clockwise losens it, anti clock tightens it, if it was at 12 o'clock to start with turning the holder anti-clock woul loosen it and clockwise tighten it? I think.

Anyhow I'm sure its in the right way but it still touches the slider with 15mm slack so I'll see how it feels when riding but I'm concerned about possibe damage to bearings etc.

However I was also wondering if the previous owner had fitted a chain with one link short would this possibly cause the same situation? If so how many links in an NC30 chain, I'll get counting.

best to be slack than tight. When you sit on it, and you generally will sit on it to ride it......... - i imagine it wont touch the swing arm even with more than 25mm slack, unless you weigh next to nothing.
