Where to go, What to do next, HRC carbs??

Post by 28hodge » Fri Mar 02, 2012 2:49 pm

So, ive kinda finished my trackbike, to the extent that its up and running and working as it should be, But now im a bit bored and wanna keep going, but looking for a bit of a direction of what to look at next.

I'm currently running a stock induction set up, with the filter (OEM honda) airbox with full snorkel and airbox base including the tray thing that goes into the v of the frame which is all intact and un cut, has no holes cut into it. I have not drilled my slides but i also haven't checked to see if a previous owner has but either way pick up does not seem to be wanting.

I do not have the rubber flap (Part 15 in the link below) on the bike though, this is because the bike came without the rubber flap.

C:\Documents and Settings\hodgsonk\My Documents\NC30 docs\rubber flap.mht

I am running a full micron system, and have 120 jets in the front and 122.5 in the rear, after a trackday at oulton on the 18th Feb i had a look at the plugs and the back plugs seem spot on and the front plugs maybe a little lean, but not very much, touch and go really as to whether its worth changing them, bike felt fit and healthy right through the rev range didnt feel to lag or bog anywhere.

I have got a rs250 shock resprung and set up for the NC30, forks are modified and feel good, brakes were all split, fully serviced with seals and fluids, fresh pads.

I dont wanna spend a stupid amount of money so the engine is staying stock, its been ported prior to me buying it and thats how its staying.

Im thinking HRC carbs, im right in thinking that i just need the stacks that are now available from RO, plus some bigger main jets and 40 pilot jets. Mod my carb mounting tray to remove the ridges and and drill the holes, anything else? NC24 slides would be good but not sure they are strictly 100% necessary? i know your meant to buy needles too but i have weird adjustable needles in the carbs that came with it, you can see them here, first post on page three.....

Anybody got any advice of what to look at next, or do we think HRC icarbs is the next logical step. Or just ride it till i enter a race and then see how much it s lacking?? or Dyno it and see what we got to start with? need to know a good guy in the northwest that knows his V4's mind, any ideas?

Bike is purely going to be a trackbike so open carbs not a problem although i thinking i'll put some wire gauze over them all the same.

Any ideas or guidance appreciated.
Thanks

HRC carbs can take some setting up so If it were me id buy another set of carbs and HRC them, that way when your at the track and there not playing ball you can revert back to your known working setup with minimal fuss instead of wasting the day chassing your tail round with jetting. Come home and look at what there doing wrong, seek advice and try again. Im sure that'll keep you away from that pesky TV

If you want to be fiddling then get them heads off and clean the casting marks out of them, lap the valves in and decoke the piston tops....

that takes a while...and is always a good call!!

Straighten your rad fins?

fit an oil cooler?

Funny you should mention the oil cooler was looking at that yesterday and to be honest after reading the akhara site info on it it looks straight forward enough, BUT, i have micron headers from the front so straight pipes that wont give me clearance so i think its a bit of a non starter, still got a water pump cover and 600 oil cooler in watch in ebay tho.

Inlets are fully fettled,

Not done by my hand tho, not gone any further into the engine apart from checking the valve clearances.

i think i will cut the airbox base flap as per RO suggestions in this article again off akhara site...

Will not having the rubber flap affect this or not?

You want a Fazer oil filter and a Mocal Air/Oil cooler..not one of them pesky watery ones..

FZ filter is short and allows clearance,

If my fitting an NC24 oil pump goes well I'll have a MOcal to flog...

I don't run a fan on my road bike - plan on running a fan on my Oil rad instead...more oil=cooler bike..I reckon!

Just read your massive post royster on your 600 cooler and fan water pump casing mod, I'd be ok doing this as its a track bike so never going to be on the road but the more I think about it the more I'm starting to think its all a bit unnecessary, my bike takes an age to warm up as it is so is it really likely to get too hot on track? I'm doubting it will! As a garage fettling project I'm still keen to get it done but it isn't really gonna help my trackbike out.

Think a spare set of carbs to play with is at the minute more useful, but potentially more of a problem and headache to get running well. Booked some dyno time but can't get me in till the 31st march, I'll see what it's making to begin with and go from there.

Any thoughts on he airbox base mod and drilling the holes into it?
